NSR: take the CPR class!
« on: September 10, 2021, 05:47:07 PM »
Had an occasion to perform CPR on an 89 yr old gentleman this morning.
Rec'd an urgent call from my wife that my FIL had stopped breathing.

I got up from my scooters and ran a couple of red lights - when I arrived at my in-laws house my SIL had arrived first and was attempting CPR on her father.
Her chest compressions were much too light - and her breaths were not inflating him, for a couple of reasons.

I checked his vitals, knew that he was gone - but took over the CPR and continued until the squad arrived about 20 mins later.
For the sake of the wife and daughter I thought it best to continue... and to let the medics arrive and make the announcement.
Done right - it IS a work-out.

FIL was bed ridden, and in very, very failing health since being hospitalized with Covid last winter. A stubborn old fellow - he refused visiting nurses and even phone appointments with his family and heart doctors.
The medics confirmed what I knew - that we were both much too late to save him.

Still, it is a good idea to learn proper CPR.

Sorry about the  loss of your FIL..  We had CPR class  twice a year for 30 years at work.  I don't think I would have lasted 20 min.  CPR done correctly is exhausting.

Did the training years ago with fire department. Used years later as a pfc (poor civilian). 'Tis a workout! Longest number of minutes I can recall. 15, 20...don't know.

Thanks -
He was a pretty good guy. After only 5 years of marriage he stopped referring to me as "Slick", his favorite daughter's latest boyfriend :)

A little too thrifty - he left a letter with instructions.
He used to joke that he wanted me to rent a gas post hole digger from Lowe's and drop him straight down out back by his tomato plants.
Fortunately - he didn't write that down.
