iRIDIUM SPARK PLUG?
« on: September 20, 2021, 08:31:05 PM »
Back when I had my 2012 GTI 300 some folks were running a iridium spark plug for better performance. Are they still the better option for a spark plug in a scooter?

Yes, When I purchase a used scooter the first thing I do is change the fluids and put in a Iridium spark plug.
In parts 200S and Grand Vista and my motorcycles 2 CS BMW'S and one GS BMW.

Sold-32 Kymco scooters of various sizes this summer.

Agreed.
They're not magic .....but I find that they give my scooter a little healthier, stronger, idle. No idea what's going on at speed...but it's  nothing bad.
Plus they are not expensive and easy to source at auto parts stores.
Some cars use them as standard.

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

Strangely enough a copper plug usually has a fatter spark than an iridium, or platinum.
They just don't last as well, which on a high rpm motor can be a problem.
Due to the frequency of service I did run copper in my SYM until the last change, but run iridium in my Burgman, which has a longer service interval and is also more of a PITA to change.

I get at least 50,000 miles out of cheap OEM plugs....so why waste money on more expensive plugs?  First thing I do with new bike/scooter is pull plugs---Never Seize the threads, put back in and ride!

Iridium spark plugs take less voltage to fire resulting in more dwell time.  Translates to better combustion,  lower emissions,  better fuel economy and more HP.

I tried the correct Denso vs the correct NGK iridium plugs in my Like200i years ago.
Very much preferred the idle character and idle  speed of the NGK.
I carry a spare under the seat to make me feel bet....well heck. Not like it weighs anything.

Stig  that's the good thing about the Iridium spark plugs,  it should last the life of the scooter or 100k miles.
