When I bought my 2022 Kymco AK 550 the dealer installed a Battery Tender cable for me. He said it was because he had read about issues with this bike running down the battery faster than most bikes. That was great of him to do that. He ran that cable into the right glove box. The only issue I had was that I intend to also use that cable to power my Slime mini compressor using a SAE to 12 vdc socket adapter and my mini compressor NEEDS 15 amps. The Battery Tender cable is only 7.5 amps. The wire size in the Battery Tender cable is 18 ga so it is possible I COULD get away with putting a 10 amp fuse in the fuse holder but that's still not enough for the compressor. So I bought a SAE to battery cable with 16 ga wire and a 15 amp fuse to replace it with. Turns out the end of the cable installed was a little short and didn't extend beyond the opening of the glove box so I had to reach in a little to plug or unplug anything. The new 15 amp cable I bought is about 3 inches longer so that makes it much easier to manage since it now sticks out of the glove box a few inches.
I used mostly the tools that were included in the Kymco tool kit that was included with the AK 550. But needed to also use a smaller Allen wrench for the 2 screws on each side of the dash displays front cover and my ratchet handle with the extension and 12 mm socket for the windshield mounting brackets. Attached is a photo of the tools that are included in the Kymco tool kit plus some extra tools I added so far. All except the ratchet handle/extension/socket (laying on the bum bumper) are now either in the tool pouch mounted to the bottom of the seat or in the under seat storage box.
It's easy to remove the shield and brackets. Used the included Allen wrench to pop out the plastic rivets on the shield trim. Then the included 10 mm open ended wrench to remove the shield bolts. Then I used my ratchet handle and socket to remove the shield brackets. They are too deep set to fit the open ended wrench in to get to them so must have a deep socket or extension with a socket to get to them.
Then I removed the 2 plastic rivets on the back side top over the dash displays. And I used a smaller Allen wrench than what Kymco provided to remove the 2 screws on either outside of the dash displays. The front cover comes off easier than on other bikes I've worked on. Simply pull straight forward, not up or down, and it will unlatch or unsnap from the flat hooks across the top edge. There are hooks along each side as well that are shaped to release when pulling forward.
Then I removed the fuse block from the clip on top the battery cover and removed the battery cover that is held on with one screw at the front bottom and 2 flat hooks on the top rear of the cover. I removed the negative cable first as always when working on the battery. Then the positive cable. Then I pulled out the Battery Tender cable from the glove box.
I then installed the new 15 amp cable and reconnected the battery cables in reverse order of removal. Installed the battery cover and clipped the fuse block back on top that cover.
Attached are a few pictures of the dash display front cover showing the clips down one side and also at the top. I included a picture intentionally brightened to be able to see the flat hooks across the top rear that the cover must snap onto. Line up all the side hooks carefully and also line up the cover across the top. Then push the cover straight to the rear making sure all the edges are lined up and the hooks will all snap in place. Then insert the side screws and then also the plastic rivets. I included another picture to show how those rivets should look when you reset them to be put back in and once inserted all the way press the center pin to be flush with the surface.
There are a few electrical settings that are reset and need to be changed when the battery is disconnected and reconnected. The units reset to Km and tire pressure resets to the default units. You don't loose the Noodoe dash items that were added but any clock looses the correct time. So be sure to have BT enabled on your phone before turning on the AK so the clock automatically resets to the right time. Then manually change the units back to what you want them on the left display for tire pressure and miles/Km. For those in the USA you can set the units to miles by showing the main odometer and then holding the orange "O" button on the right control cluster until it changes. This will also automatically change the speedo from km/h to mph.
