winter scooter tires....
« on: December 14, 2021, 02:27:52 PM »
Look at all the sipes molded into these tires~!
The siping - or thin slits cut or molded into the tread blocks, help to increase the grip in harsher weather conditions.
I'll go out in the cold - but not on ice or snow any longer....nor will I ride in the 'after-salt' on roads.

Wonder why this guy was mixing the treads ('brands')?

Who woulda thunk they make tires like that for a scooter! I have no desire to ride in those type of conditions. Just looking at that picture and thinking about cruising down the road makes my hands hurt from the cold!

I have a set of Metzeller feelfree Wintec and I love them ! I think it's my 7th set for about 14 years, I kill them every 2 winters.
As I ride all year long, winter tires are a must. I doesn't often snow in Belgium but temperatures in winter often go under 0°C and no problem, I wouldn't ride on summer tires !
I even bought a set of spare wheels to make the change easy between summer and winter wheels.

As I recall winter tires=law in EU.   US has lots of wimp riders who do not ride under 50 degree F.

Well, I guess I am a wimp, as 50 degrees is the EXACT temperature at which I start riding in the spring and stop riding in the fall. To each his own. I ride for fun, and being cold -- or having to bundle up like a snowman to avoid being cold -- is not fun to me. If it is for you, and others, more power to you!

I do feel more than a little silly when I bundle up for s 34°F ride.....but once out there in the dark....I'm dang glad I didn't skimp on the layers!
I have two short leashes on my jacket front. If I fall down, and can summon helpers - gives them a hand hold to hoist me back up on my feet.

I get depressed if I don't ride.....and go off my feed, like a hamster.

I am somewhat fortunate that my newfound love of scootering seems to mesh well with my longtime passion for hunting. Just as warm riding weather is on its way out, cooler hunting weather and seasons are on the way in. So, even though I'm not riding the scooter anymore during the winter months, I may be found on my side by side and pretty occupied with various pursuits in the field. So, don't have much time to lament the lack of two-wheeled riding. Will be eager to get back out there in the spring though. Those first warm days in March and April when you can get out comfortably with minimal bundling are always glorious!

Nice to have, just in case.
Here in Italy are winter tires NOT mandatory for any TWO-wheeler, even IF there would be winterly road conditions.
Austria accommodated to this law from  01.01.2018.
So it's according to law  NOT neccessary to put tires of that kind on your bike here.
Happy and safe scootering, Ruffus

In my younger days I was a 24/7 365 type of rider as the motorcycle was my only form of transport.   (I could bore you all with my tales of derring do in a foot of snow at -5C.)   These days I have the luxury of access to my wife's car (mostly) and so if it's sub-zero or icy then the two wheelers stay in the garage.  Just doesn't appeal and I don't think I have anything left to prove.

Regular tires are ok as long as this is fresh snow, it sticks, but on melted snow, you can try  ;D

I didn't go very far in the snow on my scooter.  I have taken some much longer rides in worse conditions on my motorcycles.

This was a challenging ride:

As was this:

Next time we get a good snow I will head out and ride in it just for fun.
