Checking the Oil Level (4 Stroke)
« on: November 03, 2010, 08:20:49 PM »
Just been looking through the manual and noticed that it says 'When checking the oil, remove the dipsick, clean it and place back into the engine (dont screw it in)'

Dont screw it in? Is this right? So I checked mine as the manual says and the oil doesnt even touch the dipstick?

The oil is still fairly Golden coloured, but if I do screw it all the way in to check the level its almost perfect?

Im confused :(

That helps.... what are you getting at?

The point is the manual misses out loads of stuff. Does the Scooter have to be on its stand? If so should it be resting on the front or back wheel? Is the dipstick read from the back or front?

..yes it is..

..check oil level with the scoot on it's center stand...

..front or back tire on the ground...

..if it's within the upper 25% of the "thatched" area, then you're good...

..change your oil at at least 2/3 the recommended interval, if you ride it hard, and pretty much daily...

peace

Oil is always checked on every bike on center stand, except for those bikes that have only side stand, which are usually motorcycles and not scooters. In that case the manufacturer has accounted for that difference by adjusting marks on the dip stick.

Wheel resting is fretting over minutiae. :)

I check my oil as the following.

1) Level ground/
2) Hold the bike up at its balanced point, easier to have a wall to help if your not coordinated enough
3) Unscrew the oil stick
4) Clean the dipstick
5) place back in engine DONT screw it in
6) Check the level, should be in the middle of the cross hatch section.

Overfilling oil is WORSE then underfill even more so with these GY6 style engines due to the crankcase pressure they build up UNLESS you have an aftermarket crankcase ventilator.

Checked mine as said, oil is VERY clean, and its about a 1/4 up the BACK of the dipstick, hardly anything on the front of it.

Sounds like you need to fill some more oil in the engine.
But you need to make shure you place the scooter on level ground on center stand.
If the scooter stand a little to the side you will get a false reading.
Also if the engine has just been running you need to wait 2 minuts before you read the level so the oil can go down to the bottom of the engine.

If you turn the dipstick a little you get the same level on the front and back so that way you dont have to think what side to read.
Or else you can just read the oil level as being in middle of the front and back reading.

The oil needs to be between these to marks.
