Am I too fat for a People 50?
« on: November 04, 2010, 05:07:54 PM »
I am considering getting a People 50 but I'm afraid I weigh too much for such a little engine.  I would like to avoid getting anything bigger because you don't need a motorcycle endorsement for 50cc and under in CO. I weigh ~230 and I'm planning on just scooting to my office once a week. (I work from home, no sense paying tons of money for my VW GTI when I don't drive it) Any thoughts?

What is the route you would travel? Is it hilly? What's the general speed of surrounding traffic?

You are not too big for a people 50 , it would be one of the best 50cc scoots you could choose . Good luck .

Your not fat your just under tall. I am 240 but 6ft 7 If I was 7ft10 I would be underweight and over tall? LOL! In my opinion that poor 50 will be hurting in Colorado assuming its Colorado I couldn't imagine a big person riding a 50CC scoot up the mountain to reach mile high. If you were out in the dessert on flats I think it would be ok, but still underpowered.
Buy a 150, and put 50CC emblems on it. Just dont go over 35MPH.
Its not that hard to get a motorcycle license.  Go online study the manual schedule a date, take the test. get ya a scoot atleast a 150CC and you are going to be much happier.
IMO a big guy riding a 50CC scooter looks ..... Ohh I wont say it..

This is why we go for lighter roller weights.

Yeah roller weights will help his acceleration but hurt his top end speed which a 50cc isnt much more then 30-35 stock with his weight.
Depends on the traffic he rides in, early in the morning where people are running late for work or women putting on makeup, etc. Not being able to go with the flow of traffic is dangerous, more dangerous then speeding. Now if he lived out in a rural area and was riding from a log cabin down the road to a farm to work maybe seeing 3 cars on a busy day this type and size of bike will be ok.
Going up any incline at 20-25mph in rush area traffic could be dangerous IMO.

Not sure about the weight issue - I come in about 155 so not sure how much those extra pounds cut the top end.

I'm still working on the roller weights - trying out the 5.5s right now.

I think the 5s are the way to go though - really made a big difference on those hills.  I'm going to go with the Dr Pulley's when I finally settle on the weight.

How much difference do the clutch springs make?

Speed (as indicated - haven't done the GPS to see what the real speeds are)

Level ground= 60 kph
Up a gradual hill= 50 kph
Up a long steep hill= around 30 kph
