2017 Kymco UTV 450i throttle cable assistance needed

All - have had my Kymco for almost two years been great for what I use it for.  This weekend was ice fishing (-20 actual temps) throttle cable got a bit sticky...friend wiggled the throttle cable under front of UTV and might have damaged the throttle cable as it seems "stick" open or hot at times - and of course if not in neutral when starting it can cause problems in park (running to fast to shift).  Question is there an adjustment on the throttle cable or should I just replace cable - follow up is there any gotchas to look out for with either approach -

Sounds like a similar issue as happens with a motorcycle with a throttle cable getting stuck. Is it a dual cable (push/pull) arrangement or just a single cable? Description makes it sound like a single cable. I'd remove the cable and check for kinks or crimps along the sheath.

If none then there could be some deposit inside the sheath that is making the cable bind. To clean that out I would first get some WD40 into the sheath and then work that cable both ways through the sheath as much as you can until you feel it moving freely. Then follow that with some grease, getting it down inside the sheath as much as possible and work the cable both ways through the sheath to work the grease all the way along the cable.

If there are any kinks or crimps along the sheath, or if an inspection of as much of the cable as you can see shows any bend or fraying of the braided/twist of the cable then replace it.

Yeah single cable - appears like the cable a sheath on one end seem to have “separated” a bit so the throttle will stick “open” a bit once you engage the foot throttle - causing the UTV to run to hot and unable to shift

Sounds like a replacement is in order then.

This goes back several years but if memory serves, The early 450's had a recall on throttle cables for this issue. You might check with your local Kymco dealer and ask them to look it up.

Was just looking on the recalls page on KymcoUSA.com. Find that link in the list at the very bottom of the main web page.
There is a current throttle cable recall for all 2015-2016 UXV 450i including the LE and Turf models. If that includes your model then it's a warranty recall issue. (is yours a UXV or a UTV as the thread title states?)

So call me stupid (everyone else does) but what is different between UTV and UXV ?

Also has anyone ever replaced a throttle cable? Local dealer shutdown about a year ago - looking for any directions as I will be replacing myself…any direction or feedback would be appreciated

Are you absolutely certain yours is a UTV? I did a search for "Kymco UTV 450" and there is NOTHING for that. But LOTS for the Kymco UXV 450i. I did see a UTV 700 and 500 but when I click on those the results that come back are the UXV 700 or 500. In fact, the same happened when I searched the UTV 450... only the UXV 450 showed up in the results. So I don't know.


What does the VIN/Model plate show?
Or maybe it is sometimes referred to as UTV but the official model is UXV. Again, I don't know.

You are right looks like UXV….honestly did not know that is what they called them…for my simple mind they are all UTV…none the less I gotta fix myself…did order replacement cable - does anyone have any experience replacing one? Any tricks to look out for?

All I can say is that I have read that the tricky bit is at the grip. How tricky is the big question. I cannot help with that since it's been a REALLY long time since I swapped one out on a small 125cc motorcycle (my first Harley).

How long is the cable assembly? Amazon has some good stainless cable with Teflon lined housing for do it yourself replacements. I have used their stuff to fix the overly complicated seat latches on my Kymco Downtown 300i scoot.
