lithium ion battery vs AGM

Ok, show of hands what type of battery do you run in your scooter. Agm or lithium? Being someone who only works three miles from his home I find it difficult to maintain AGM batteries. No matter how much I maintain them the load they produce is very difficult to start my scooter (Granted I use a 12v6A battery) would it be worth it to purchace a lithium battery and get more life out of it compared to purchacing an AGM? Just curious.

I use a normal Yuasa YTX7A, no maintenance type, nothing special.  This one is about 4 years old, no problems. The previous one lasted about 6 years(?).

Yep, I'm on Yuasa batteries too.  Though I do use a battery tender on the Triumph as that doesn't get used too frequently - especially in the winter months!

Lithium Ion batteries are light, powerful (and expensive).
A potential problem - they die with no warning of a near discharge condition.
If you don't have a kick starter, this could be a problem.

To add to the above... If you use a battery maintainer then you need to be sure that battery maintainer specifically states that it can support Lithium batteries. If not then the maintainer or the battery may be damaged if you attempt to use them together.


I have a Battery Tender Plus and the manual for that states specifically to use it to charge/maintain ONLY a  6 cell or 3 cell lead acid battery. That means a typical wet cell or AGM battery for motorcycles or other vehicles. So I cannot use it for Lithium batteries and would have to buy a different maintainer for one of those.

Is there room in the battery box to drop in a sealed 8, 10 or 12 Ah battery! More Ah, the better. I have a 14 Ah in my LIKE200I,  replacing the stock 8 Ah.

AGM, mostly YUASA bought dry so nice and fresh when I install 'em.
Kept on a tender for the most part.  Decent life, & no worries about sub 40F temps.

AGM forever. Cheaper than lithium even if you have to replace it every few years.

I use cheap OEM batteries/add no electronic junk/ride a lot---do not use battery tender...at first sign of trouble get new battery,    My Kawasaki Concours (bought new as spare) went 56,000 miles on original battery.   Modern bikes with fuel injection and no kick starter/scooters (modern) cannot be bump started,too----so fresh batteries a necessity.

I guess I didn't mention what battery I use...
I've always used an AGM battery designed for my bike. I might go a bit higher on Ah and/or CCA if it fits but otherwise the same type of battery the bike came with... AGM.

I have a great deal of experience with lithium batteries from my radio control hobby. Yes they are great, but not designed for scooters, atvs etc. If you live in a warm climate year roundvthen thats better, but lipo batteries do not do well in cold weather!! And yes special charging equipment is a must!!  If the wrong charger is used they will ignite and can explode!!  They burn white hot and can burn thru most anything. Can be a bomb in case of an accident!  No trying to scare everybody away, but special care is needed for lipos, a mistake can be costly.  AGM are the safest way to go for road vehicles, less maintence and more forgiving if a mistake is made..Lipos are also expensive, need special chargers, need special care, and give poor performance in cold weather.

I was having the typical power drain issues with my new AK550 so i tried a lithium and im EXTREMELY impressed so far. Cant say anything negative about it.
