normal or excess cam and rocker wear?
« on: February 26, 2022, 06:52:08 PM »
still waiting on my full gasket and seal set to put my motor back together. (People s200, 163cc)..must be on a slow boat from Taiwan. Did not find any metal shavings or anything that looked to be the source of the shavings in the motor...but looked much closer at camshaft and rockers. Including a few pics. Is this normal wear? (3600 miles /  5800 km) Or is it excessive on the cam and rockers?

While motor is apart it's easy to replace any needed parts (and cheap on these motors, too). Can buy Taida aftermarket rockers and performance cam for less $ than Kymco OEM...but they are all relatively inexpensive..

Thoughts? Normal wear or anything to be concerned with? (rockers look a little more worn than I'd expect)

@hawk, cams are like new, there HAVE to be signs of touching metals.

Rockers: cannot see 100% whether there are minimal grooves on them from this perspective. But seem to me not more than a few 1/100 mm., nothing to worry about.

Pls try with your fingernail to move across signed areas on your rockers, there must not be a square-shaped indention (flat spot).

If there is no rim whatever or play in their eyelets  to be felt, don't change them, causes only trouble.

Ruffus, the only spot where I feel the slightest bump is on the left rocker in the picture (exhaust) moving fingernail toward top of pic, feel the slightest ridge as I'm moving off the wear area toward top of pic...but other than that, nothing on the other (intake) rocker or any of the cam lobes.

So it seems that these appear just fine? (and thanks for your input, I know you have a lot more experience with this than I do)

@hawk, like I wrote those item are fine.
Just for peace of mind I would "polish" this rockers with a 1000 - 2000 grid corund paper to achieve an overall smooth metallic surface (no pressure).
Then a final  sweep with metal polish paste to shine it. The smoother the better, less friction.

This done, a thoroughly cleaning with fuel or spirit to get rid of all abrasive grains is recommended.
