AK550 gas mileage update
« on: May 01, 2022, 04:54:44 PM »
Just got my 2nd fill-up. As the dealer didn't really top off the tank when purchased I had to wait for my second top-off to get a better idea of the gas mileage. I am currently getting 55.6 mpg. Most of this was on local streets at 45 mph and below; a few miles at 50+ mph. I still have less than 300 miles on the bike, so hopefully that will improve some.

The flashing "E" came on at a little over 130 miles for that tank. The bike took approx 2.5 gals, leaving 1.4 in the tank. Being conservative, I would plan that 1 gal of that 1.4 is useable, giving a total of approx 192 mi. on a tank. Not like the X-Town I had at 70+ mpg, but considering the difference in the bikes, I am good with this.

Good mileage. I got lower 50’s on my second fill up. Unfortunately, most of my riding on this tank came with stop and go traffic. I have been able to get onto some county roads with little traffic now so hopefully my next fill up will show better mpg.

I think we'll improve with break-in over time. The good news is no matter what the gas mileage, the AK is awesome to ride!!

It took over 7000 miles to stabilize fuel consumption/ milage on my DT300i Kymcos. They all seem to take a long distance to seat in.

True about mpg becoming more stable with several thousand miles on the odo. I bought my CTX1300 with 1 mile on the clock and the mpg didn't stabilize until around 8000 miles. It did improve while riding throughout those miles. My AK had 6 miles when I rode away from the dealer and the first few fill ups were around 55 mpg, give or take a few. But that was questionable since I didn't know for sure what I was seeing with the gas gauge and was stopping often to fill the tank and also wasn't consistent how full I was filling the tank.

Last week I returned from a riding/camping trip that took me 1374 miles. I now know what the gas gauge is showing me. I usually waited until the last red bar started flashing before looking for gas. That would happen between 132-150 miles. Twice I ran it down until the red E started to flash which happened around 170 miles. I guess the gas gauge varies from one AK to another. But mine has been consistent in this. MPG varied due to changes in riding conditions and speeds I was riding. All Interstate at 70+ mph resulted in a bit lower at 50.7 mpg and a mix of smaller highways resulted in a bit higher. My lowest was the first leg of the trip when temps were colder in the early morning at 48.3 mpg and the same when riding through a very severe thunderstorm with high winds going only 35 mph or less (rain and low temps will negatively effect mpg). My highest was 57.3 mpg on secondary highways with warmer temps. I calculated my average at about 52 mpg for the entire trip. I still expect that to improve a bit in the next several thousand miles.

Great info, thanks for posting! My last fill-up showed 51mpg, lower than previous at about 55. Not sure why as riding speeds and conditions have been about the same, but I am going to try to fill up to the same point from now on at the filler neck (at least as close as possible) to stay consistent. I still am under 500 miles on the bike, so not too concerned - still playing with and figuring everything out.

Hmm Gas mileage on my 550 is around 60-65 mpg, but I only have 610 miles on it. Also, its in the shop because the starter isn't working right...kind of pisses me off for a new bike. Any one else have starter issues?

Is that mpg what shows on the meter? or is it calculated based on gallons added to full tank and miles traveled since last full fill up?

As is common on many bikes with a mpg meter display that meter is WAY off. Some bikes show WAY below actual calculated numbers but I find my AK shows WAY high numbers. Most of the time the meter indicated average mpg for a tank is somewhere between 65-71 mpg. I know from calculating that this is not even close so I usually ignore it.

As to the starter issue... I think I may have read of one instance of an issue with the starter switch but not more than that.

As to mpg with only a few hundred miles on the odometer, that will definitely improve. I've now owned 3 bikes from brand new (less than 12 miles on the clock) and the mpg always improved over the run of several thousand miles... up to 8000 miles... before it stabilized where it would be for the duration of my ownership. I usually put on between 25,000 to 50,000 miles before I sell a bike.

I was basing that off my miles traveled/gas put in the tank. Then again it was a lot of steady state driving with few stops and starts. Kind of like highway miles, probably made a difference, never went over 55 mph.

That would be the ideal conditions to get the best mpg. Speed between 45-55 and very few stops/starts if any. Great mpg then.

When I still had my Burgman 650 I was getting over 60 mpg regularly during the trips to my son's home 26 miles away doing basically the same... maintaining between 40-45 mph the entire way with short stints at 35 and very few stops (and very conservative starts after those) during very warm summer time weather. Did that trip every day for several months so was able to establish a consistent basis. And that was all using e10 87 octane gas, Top Tier of course.
