New Battery Died
« on: May 16, 2022, 08:59:10 PM »
Why would a battery I installed in October die now? My last battery (same make/model) lasted 3 1/2 years. The OEM battery before that lasted 5 years. Could something be wrong with the stator or rectifier?

one test you can do is hook up a multimeter to the battery and with the scooter running rev up the engine and hold at a steady, higher rpm to see what kind of volts you're getting to the battery. I believe it should be upper 13's to mid 14's, roughly? Maybe you are getting either too high or too low voltage while running..?

The battery can go dead if the voltage going into the battery is too high?

too much or too little voltage can both be bad

Thanks Ruffus.

Disappointingly, the battery's voltage is 12.9v and it doesn't increase while revving the engine. So I've got an electrical problem and am going to use these great videos to diagnose it.

I like that guy, he has great videos! He started a new channel from his new scooter / bike repair shop but has only posted a few....but he's a wealth of knowledge.

@Vision, yes can happen. As you see it's not a big deal to find out where the voltage got stuck.
I would suspect first the regulator/rectifier then check further on my alternator.
One of this items or the cabling between is the culprit. Let us know how it goes.

I tested the voltage from the stator today using the process in the video. Unlike the video whose stator output connector contains three pins, my Agility's connector contains two pins. The video says each pin should be around 10v at idle and above 40v (not above 55f) while throttling. My results (tested a few times for accuracy).

Pin #, idle, throttling
1 (horizontal), 9v, 11v
2 (vertical), 163v, 330v

It was surprising, I have no idea how the vertical pin is getting so many volts but that's what happened. A new OEM stator is on the way.

Amazing, never measured that much on a stator, except on really big truck (lorry) generators.
But good to know that it can happen on our scoots  two pronged stators too.

could also be an issue with the new battery installed. Different manufactures make decent batteries bt sometimes others not so much. Me myself I tend to get eight months Max out of my batteries because of the short trips that I take.

I don't know if short trips should kill a battery. Do you have a battery tender?

I do and hook it up regularly, I think it is just the issue of the short trips that causes mine to die

I replaced the old stator with an OEM stator this morning. The video makes the job straightforward. The Agility has an additional piece behind the stator to keep the pickup coil's wire out of the way.  I get the following readings which don't make complete sense but all is well so far.

Pin #, idle, throttling
1 (horizontal), 30ish v, up to 70ish+ v
2 (vertical), 30ish v, up to 70ish+ v
