New roller weights and belt..
« on: November 15, 2010, 08:46:05 PM »
I've just came back from the workshop with new rollerweights (13g) and a new belt.
I bought original Kymco parts.

I'm a bit confused with the results of the roller swap. The scooter seems to accelerate
better, but also seems to start from lower revs and maintain the lower revs up to 60km/h
when revs start to climb more rapidly then with the stock setup. That, of course, doesn't
make a lot of sense.

Since there's no tach on it, all I can go by is sound, and at 50mph the revs SEEM TO BE
higher. I had just a short ride on it so I can't be sure. I'll make a video and try to compare
it with the stock setup to see if there's any measurable difference.. but so far it seems
that wind might make a bigger difference then going from 14 to 13g rollers.

I now even doubt that the stock rollers were 14g, I'm just not sure anymore.

Other then that, the scooter is now a fair bit smoother. Just before the repair shop visit
the revs would rise a lot more at first then come down at about 15-20km/h, and now they're
as steady as it gets.

The scooter has 11.500km on the odo (just over 7000 miles), and the wear on the rollers and
belt was apparent, but less then expected since it's only 500km untill the schelduled replacement
interval. I'm 100% sure both would have lasted in excess of 15.000km. Even the rollers wore out
rather evenly, which is a rare occurence.

That'll have to do for now.

That would make sense if you had lighter rollers in to begin with and the 13gm weights are heavier than whatever you had (maybe 11gm?).

Heavier weights will give you a slower take off since they don't push out as quickly, but better acceleration once the speed of the bike picks up.  The lighter rollers will definitely give you more revs off the line, but weaker acceleration as the speed gets higher.

It's a different story today..

Seems like the first few miles from the dealer to my home weren't a good example of
what was to come.

Today I've done about 15 miles and it's clear these weights are lighter, but I must say
the performance difference (subjectively) doesn't seem to follow the noise (rpm) difference
in a way you'd expect.

I've used to keep it at 50mph when going out of town since the bike felt the smoothest at
that speed/rpms, now it's more like 46-47mph for the same revs.

The flat spot between 25 and 37mph that was there before is now reduced to 25 to 30mph
and that takes only about a second and the revs start to pick up again resulting in better
acceleration through the entire 0-60mph range. The top speed seems to be the same.

I'm sure this will affect the fuel consumption more then it has affected the acceleration though.
Dr. Pulley 13g rollers might be a good idea too, but I'm happy with it as it is.. and I was happy
with it before to tell the truth..

If I sell my Kawasaki, I'll probably sell the Agility too and just get a bigger scooter and be done
with it (yeah, I know Axy..).

I'll make a new thread on the forum specifically for bitching about that.

fuel consumption are just the same as before...

i was running 11.5g with stiffer spring...came with malossi....

can really bitch about that, on full tank diff is like 5km....if u dont race it all the time...

its just like 50cc, screaming...painfully...change it to 13g....

with 11.5 too fast for me....

I feel sorry for the engine even after going from 14 to 13, seems the revs have increased by a lot
more then I was expecting, but there's no doubt the scooter is faster up to about 50mph now, but
I think it's lost some of the power at the very top, takes somewhat longer from 55mph to 60mph now
(could be just the wind, can't really confirm this).

The lighter weights definitely changed the engine sound when I made the switch on my guilty 50- but without a tach I can't be sure how much higher the revs are.

And I would agree with the assessment that the sound generated by the lighter rollers isn't matched the increased fury of acceleration.

I'm thinking that the lighter weights need to be paired with a performance variator to get maximum benefit.

Yesterday changed weight rollers because in the past 50 kms the behavior of vario became highly erratic. It would skip and slide over roller weights, meaning they were worn out.

For the past two changes, 3x18x14 13g and 3x18x14 11g rollers were used.

The first such set lasted exactly 7000 kms, this one only 4000 kms.

Below are the pics of the "roller weights". Completely shredded.

Yesterday Dr. Pulley 18x14 13g sliders and teflon bushings were installed.
Did not drive it yet.

A125 has 24.000 kms now.

That's exactly what I was looking at for the next replacement, the 13g Pulleys..
Waiting for a report!

BTW, my stock rollers were still more then usable at the 10.000km check-up, as
was the belt.

Stocks were almost like new at 13K when first replaced.
These are not stocks, and two different weights were mixed...

Yeah, I've read that in your previous posts too.. but mine aren't stock either, and
at the last check were as-new again.. (replaced at 10kkm, checked just before
14kkm) and are 1g lighter.

I have a 2007 that i bought new aND IT  now has 16,500 k on it and never changed belts or rollers. Im thinking of doing it but im having no issues. I just want to do a little modifying since the warranty is long over. The only issue ive had is the clutch grab at take off.  I have had the belt chcked at 12,000 and the dealer said it did not need one yet!
