Low Electrical Power
« on: November 18, 2010, 10:37:19 PM »
Hi,

I've been around this forum for a few months and have only just decided to start joining in.

My scooter is around 2 months old. I'm having trouble starting. Sometimes the electric starter will sound as though its struggling to turn and others it will spin as though it has no resistance, but not start. I am having to kick start it, which isn't a big problem. My lights and instruments seem dimmer but not sure if its just my eyes.

Would it just be a simple dying battery or something a bit more serious.

Thanks, Brads.

Could be the battery - if you have a battery tender then try charging the battery up and see how that works for you.  It might be the battery is bad or that the charging system isn't working right.

Could also be the starter - I had one die on me last year and it exhibited some of those symptoms as well.

Just have to do some experimenting and see what turns up.

I tried the horn today and it was no where near as loud as it was a week or two ago. When I tried it while holding the brake lever it was barely above a whisper in volume.

I had nothing from the starter when I tried it.

The brake light gentle fades on, instead of being instant.

I did see a couple of teaspoons worth of water in the battery compartment when I opened it.

I have been unable to get hold of a battery charger to try it out.

Water is bad - you don't want that getting into the compartment.  If you can figure out where that is leaking it and stop it you'll be in better shape.

Sounds like your battery is about dead.  Could be the battery, could be the charging system.

See if you can get a voltmeter on the scoot when it is running to see what kind of charge (if any) the battery is getting.

It is leaking by design because morons have put battery under floor pan but forgot to put any kind of sealant around.
On all A50s and A125s, battery, CDI and fuses are floating in water.

I wouldn't agree with them all being leaky.

My A50 sits out in the rain and is ridden in the rain on a regular basis and I have no water leakage.

Probably why someone stole my battery cover and battery - to replace theirs that did leak!

I managed to borrow a battery charger and multimeter, unfortunately I'm not sure if the multimeter works.

The charger sticker says:

For 12 volt lead acid batteries only.

Minimum Capacity 20 Ah
Input: 240v - 50Hz 55w
Output:12v 2.7a DC (4A rms)

Would this be ok to use.

Would I be right in thinking that a bead of silicon around the battery cover rim, would help stop the water leak.

Thanks

You might have an issue with that charge as you say it says that the minimum capacity is 20 Ah - I recall that the agility is only 4 Ah but you might want to check on that.

That's what I thought, just had to make sure.

Going to give the company I got it from a ring tomorrow, to see if they can do anything. Hopefully they can and I can get back to riding with full power electrics. Riding in fog with low power lights isn't much fun.

Thanks

Yeah, you want to get that straightened out quickly.

Sounds like the battery isn't charging correctly.  Once you diagnose that problem you should be on your way.

to be honest if your scoot is just 2 months old and its giveing you a hard time take it back
you should not go threw this. a new scoot should be ready to start and ride

They came and they took it away :(

I was left with another Agility 50 on a slightly newer plate, while they take mine to look at.

I did a couple of journeys on it and, I want mine back. It has a few faults, which is to be expected as a courtesy bike. The main ones are the back break is either off or lever in as far as possible and fully on. The headlight doesn't work properly, I had to ride home 5 miles using side lights or high beam. It does seem to pick up speed better and definitely starts easier.

I guess I can't feel the bike as much, which doesn't leave me with lots of confidence in it.

Hopefully I won't have to wait too long until I get mine back in running order.
