That's what I do... until I get accustomed to what the gas gauge is really showing me.
When you fill up are you just sticking the nozzle down into the tank and filling until it automatically shuts off?
If so, then don't do that. I find doing that the pump nozzle will shut off way before I come close to filling the tank. I always put just the bare end of the nozzle into the hole in the plate, just barely enough to hold it but no more. And then when it does shut off I look and maybe keep filling until the gas is level with that plate in the gas port.
Also, don't forget that the last red bar is not the only reminder of low gas. When that bar goes away the red "E" starts flashing and that is the real "get gas now" indicator. You should be able to get 35-40 miles on just the last bar, and then at least another 12-18 miles on the flashing red "E" before you risk going dry. I usually have about 1+ gallons left when the last red bar starts to flash. Maybe a bit more. Maybe there is variation in what the gas gauge is showing. That's why I always reset Trip A when I fill up and ride to 150 miles, sometimes 170 miles, before stopping for a fill up.
Trip A also controls the AVE MPG readout. Not that I pay much attention to the ave mpg number since that is way off like it is on most bikes I've owned. I've seen that show an average of over 65-75 mpg and when I calculate the miles per gallons used I get more like 53-58 mpg.
My Burgman 650 gas gauge was similar, seemed to show low gas when barely half a tank was left. So just use the Trip meter.
