What size socket? How much oil? How much torque?
« on: November 20, 2010, 11:51:40 PM »
2004 Kymco People 50.
To change the gear oil.
What size socket do I need?
How much oil do I put in?
How much do I torque the bolts?
Much thanks.

Size socket?       Buy a set of metrics and use the one that fits.

How much oil?    Measure how much you took out. The amount might  stamped on the cover or on a sticker.

Torque?              It's not critical. Somewher between it leaks and you strip the bolt.

Hi, Cloud. I was only able to find some of the info you wanted, the rest may be in the manual and I just missed it, not sure. But here is a link to the service manual. Good luck.

http://www.kymco.it/contributi/download/MANUALI_OFFICINA/MO%20P50%20(inglese).zip

And this is from the manual.

POWER DRIVE SYSTEM
TRANSMISSION CASE
Check the rear wheel transmission case
surrounding area for oil leaks.
Stop the engine and remove the oil check
bolt.
Place the motorcycle on its main stand
on level ground.
The gear oil level shall be at the oil check
bolt hole. If the oil level is low, add the
specified oil to the proper level.
Specified Gear Oil: SAE10W90#
Install and tighten the oil check bolt.
Torque: 1.0 1.5kg-m
Start the engine and check for oil leaks.

The manual will have the exact amount of oil.

Many just put in the oil until it reaches the bottom of the bolt hole.

Not sure about the bolt size as I don't have a ppl - but I'd guess maybe 10mm.

.18 ml , not quite 4 oz.. If you overfill you may damage your seal , I filled untill it started coming out of the fill hole and blew my main seal . Good luck .

The stuff I use is 80w-90 so I think that might have been a typo.

Yes, it surprised me. Then again, these manuals always do...

Good luck, Cloud.

Like I said, probably a typo - those manuals are really bad about that kind of stuff.

In fact, they often tell you different specifications on different pages!

Some tool users need to use a torque wrench since they don't have the experience of feeling when a bolt / nut is at the correct torque. Even more so when working with aluminum.
