2018 Kymco starter problem.
« on: October 08, 2022, 08:05:03 PM »
I have a  friend who has a 2018 UXV 500i. He says it was running fine , then one day it wouldn't start. I took a look at it, and it seemed to me to be cranking much slower than it should. I put a brand new battery in it, and made sure it was fully charged. And cleaned all connections. No improvement. It still turned over slowly. Occasionally it sounded like it was trying to start. All of a sudden now the starter motor spins ( and sounds like it's spinning fast) but it's not turning over the engine. Am I correct on assuming that the starter clutch is bad? And can these slip and cause slow cranking  before they quit completely? Is the clutch hard to change? Thanks!!

How many hours/miles? I think all the Kymco starters use the Honda type one-way clutch and chain for starter mechanicals. Could be a job! Inside an engine side cover...

Not sure about the 500 as I have a 450, but....if it were mine, I would pull the starter and test it.  While it is out, you can clean and relube the clutch.  Clean the electrical connections etc !!  New starters are not Cheap, hopefully you can get it sorted out....

top left, that is the starter reduction gear, could be stripped.  gasket will be around $45, starter reduction gear, if stripped ?  if it has to be order from Taiwan, maybe a month wait ?
best of luck

This is a 700i engine, the 500i engine flywheel gear might come off with the flywheel ?
