Rare sighting of a sport rider @39°F, then stupid...
« on: March 01, 2023, 04:37:49 PM »
Temp was 39°F ("feels like 32°F") at 5:30 this morning.
I was surprised to have a young sport rider pass me. "good for you", I'm thinking as I pulled up to the stop light behind him. We're in the curb lane.

Also thinking, "you might want a bigger tail light - that lavender one isn't too impressive".
Light turned green and he rocketed down the blvd. Rear tire wiggled sideways a bit 50 yrds down the street with his massive acceleration - he's still in the throttle!

He had to be doing twice the 35mph speed limit as that lavender light got smaller.

As I pulled away briskly on my LIKE200i - there was a loud chirp in my left ear, and then blue & red lights.
A city police SUV was 2 cars back on our left, in the dark, at that stop light!
He witnessed what the kid had done and was now in pursuit.

They both quickly disappeared.

I had time to think, watching that kid, that "if a car pulled from a side street down there..."- he would have needed the squad.
I hope I don't read about him in the paper tomorrow.

Double the speed limit?  Over here that would likely pull a minimum 3 month ban and points on your licence for three years.  What’s the likely penalty in Ohio Stig?

No idea, but I seriously wonder if he (she?) could catch that rider.
The bike, from the sound and rear view, looked like my son's R6.....and those things can be and handful I think.
I thought he was going to lose it when that back tire started to wobble.
I was thinking that I hoped he wasn't doing that because a scooter was sitting behind him....and I was just giving him creds' for riding on a cold morning🙂
At least he was wearing a helmet.

I got a warning only for warp 4 once, others in the group were doing warp 5, 30mph zone, I was doing 120 more or less on my SV650, all my mates were on liter bikes a half mile ahead of me

a couple miles up the road we pulled into a vacant parking lot to regroup, we get our helmets off, a couple minutes later the LEO that didn't chase us, pulls into the lot., The lecture went like this "I know yer dressed for it, but this ain't a race track, I had you guys at 88+, in a 30 when you went out of range of my radar, and I know you were going a hellava lot faster than that"

then he pointed his finger specifically at me "YOU, TWICE IN ONE WEEK, you better slow down" (same cop gave me warning for 55 in the same speed zone a couple days earlier) Then proceeded to tell the group he wanted to see me in the lead

I went for a loop around Lake Winnipesaukee (100 miles)one winter day at minus 12F on my SV650, lottsa cars & trucks rolled their windows down to give me a thumbs up

I've been stopped four times on bikes over the years for speeding Randy.  Twice got the lecture and twice got a ticket!  Best outcome was about 120 on a motorway here.  Sat in the back of the squad car watching myself on video whilst receiving the "you really shouldn't be doing this" lecture from a biker cop who happened to be in the pursuit car that shift!  Let me off with the verbal warning which absolutely amazed me.

Back in those halcyon days I'd be wringing the throttle every outing so reckoned if I did get a tug, it was a fair cop.  Scooters are far less tempting speed limit-wise.

The only tickets I ever got were in a car, for not really that fast speeds, but I was much younger then. what surprises me most, is the over a ton speeds on a bike that only received warnings, maybe it was because he didn't want to write a half dozen tickets to older responsible motocyclists that were fully protected single file well spaced, no traffic. If we got him on the witness stand and asked if we endangered the public, what could he really say other than we were going 4-5x the posted speed limit

my observations is that the ones that get tickets are younger, more squidly, less protected, and on bikes that are heaps...... not older white men

The only thing "RARE" about that is the temp for that sport biker to be out in. Otherwise I find that (speed) very common on primary city streets around here... at slightly warmer temps. I'm a block away from one primary divided 6 lane city street (with double turn lanes at many intersections) and can hear them revving up and down the street racing. It's like living next to a motorcycle race track sometimes. On occasion I also hear police sirens right after the sport bikes go by. But not nearly enough.

Small town here, and small city police force.  They rarely are seen on the side streets, so idiots regularly speed through neighborhood  streets.  Have one youngster who rides his dirt bike in the area and often without a helmet.

Tickets:

1968 SanAntonio TX, during Army medic training. Policeman said I didn't stop at a neighborhood stop sign, because he didn't see my feet go down on my Honda CB350.

1975: Xmas eve, about midnight, Dayton Ohio, clocked at 78MPH in my '73 Super Beetle. I framed the citation....owner's manual said my car's top speed was 73MPH! I must have been on a down grade.

I did have a Mass highway patrolman pull alongside me on I-90 and tell me to speed up in my '71 Beetle. It was new - I was breaking it in!

I was passed last night on a dark city street by a guy standing & speeding in a 4-wheeler of some kind. He was straddling the double yellow line. ABSOLUTELY no lights on. He played chicken with an approaching car then cut down a side street almost tipping over.

Hey, 36, look at that!  You’re sure lowering the average age on here. Thanks for mixing it with all the old farts on here.

I misread that as 36 yrs of riding.....
36yrs of age > well that puts him nearly out of earshot on the Group W bench 🙂...he's welcome of course  - but we'll be using handsignals.

Puts me in mind of the dialog in City Slickers, where the guy asks that crusty cowboy if he shot anyone today? He replies, "No, but the day's not over yet."
