Flasher for LED and standard turn lights? (Kymco Spade)
« on: March 23, 2023, 03:14:40 PM »
Hi, I hope it's ok to post this here. I apologize if it is not, and Moderators, please feel free to move it if necessary.

I wanted to replace the turn lights on my 2018 Kymco Spade (just because I don't like the shape/size of the stock ones). Found what I thought were the perfect ones, but unfortunately they are LED, so I need to replace the flasher.
Found a Chimera flasher at Steadygarage, I thought it was what I needed, but the connectors aren't remotely similar to the stock flasher! (so not really "plug-and-play")

I found some 3-pin LED flashers on Amazon, but their wattage rate is much lower than the Chimera (and clones), and although they might be fine for an all-LEDs setup, I'm still afraid of burning something.

Any guidance will be welcome!

Thanks.

@w6euh, welcome here.
Pls see pic, that's the right one to use for indicators, though not all of them will work, because of low wattage which excells LED to other, even companies and advertisements tell you otherwise.

Had such a case a few days ago, when a client wanted exactely this blinkers for €80,- a pair, which were not working with any relais.

Solution was then to put resistors inline to increase resistance.
Don't worry about firing up your Spade, there is a fuse in between to avoid that.
btw: this  orange indicator relais needs only two (2) pins to work. IN/OUT

when replacing your flasher relay you have 2 options - 1.find an led flasher relay with the exact same connector on it as the one you're taking off (can be difficult to find) or 2. simply cut off your factory plug and crimp on new spade connectors that will connect to whatever new relay you purchase.

Thank you, Ruffus and Iahawk, for your suggestions.

The flasher Ruffus suggested strangely doesn't match the type of connector on my bike, so although I ordered one of those at first, I wasn't able to use it (I guess I could have just replaced the connectors or soldered the wires, but I reserved those solutions as a last resource.)

I ended up using one that I found on Amazon. Although my stock flasher had 3 prongs and the one I ordered only has 2, the type of connector is the same, and it seems to work fine. I guess I'll find out eventually whether the 3rd one was important or not.
Fingers crossed.

Now I need to find the time and patience to remove the front turn lights, which looks like a whole different challenge.

Thanks again.

Ride safe.

As far as plug and play, I have replaced $28 unobtainable Kymco relays with cheaper $10 for 6 automotive relays in my DT300i by making a short adapter harness for each relay. You may be able to do the same for a flasher module.

I think you will need the wiring diagram to get the correct relay.

Ok, I see there this smaller 4mm connectors, but wouldn't it have been an option to change to 6,3mm spade connectors to make then fit?

Sorry, now I saw you had this as an solution too.
