whipped out the painter's tape again today
« on: May 31, 2023, 06:49:10 PM »

Looks goofy - but it works to block the rising sun on my morning rides home!
I have a roll of tape in each top case.
Stig

PS: Yes! - my helmets have the inner drop-down sunglass lens. But - that lens darkens everything - including the already dark tree shadows I'm riding in and out of on bright sunny days. I'd either have to ride blindly into the shadow - or slow drastically as a precaution before riding into them. Not a safe way to travel in traffic.
If you've ever met a large deer staring at you in the middle of the road just as you ride from bright sunlight into one of those tree shadows....!
Yeah - the tape helps.

I just lower the inner dark shield slightly. Helps when riding into the sun.

Don't even bother with that, I find by tilting my head down, the top of the brow cushion acts as a makeshift sun shield.

I know several riders who use black electrical tape for that purpose. Works the same but looks better.
I do the head tilt method.

They do sell black painters tape, too. A little hard to find.

Whatever works best for you I guess.  I know that at the times Stig rides the sun would be just on the horizon so maybe our wheeze wouldn't be as effective.  I recall commuting 50 miles into the sunrise and sunset back in the 80's and there were times when I was riding blind.  Not a nice experience to put it mildly!

I use painter's tape because it leaves no residue on my helmet.
I remove it when home, and don't really care what it looks like until I get there.
Interestingly.....the sheriff's department uses the same shade of blue and nearly the same width of strip added to their vehicles - to commemorate the loss of a deputy who was gunned down a few yrs ago as she answered a disturbance call.
A couple of times I've noticed deputies looking at me, and wondered what they were thinking.....
The smoke today made the low sun pretty weak. No tape needed.
Many mornings, if I were to dip my head to block the sun I'd be
moving outside my vision, even at 30mph.

Thats why I bought a adventure/dual sport helmet.
Not this one but along these lines , the visor gives you shade depending on how you tilt.
However overall I prefer my modular/flip up just for the ease of use with glasses and being
in stores etc.  I might use the dual sport 2 times a week over the flip up 5 times a week

IDK if anyone makes an adventure shaded / modular yet would think the visor might not work when you flip up but could be doable , some engineer could figure it out
