2023 scooter cannonball
« on: June 18, 2023, 01:51:04 PM »
The scooter cannonball kicked off this morning and they are on they're way from San Clemente to the east coast.  I know a number of the competitors so I'll be following along closely.  I will head out next Saturday and see them come by in person as the route passes just a little North of my house.  The cannonball site is here:  https://scootercannonball.com/

nice website...I really liked the list of all the bikes that are entered. Looks like the Vespa GTS300/250 is the clear winner for number of riders, followed by the Honda ADV150(?). Vespa, Honda and Yamaha are the majority, by far, of the entrants. I did see 2 Kymcos in there! Strangely, no Tao Tao's?!  8)

I think that I also saw a single Honda Big Ruckus in QuasiMotard's live feed from Saturday. That is an somewhat rare scooter.

At the end of day one the top 5 scooters were:

1 Burgman 200
2 Smax
3 Super Cub
4 Smax
5 Burgman 200

7 more days of riding to go.

Klav, there seem to be no kymcos in the list of scooters... Also is 280 cc the biggest scooter that you can ride? Seems to cut out a lot of brands.

There is a Like 150i running this year.  I don't know if its the same one that ran last year and finished in the top ten if I remember correctly.

I can't think of a single brand cut out by the 280cc rule.  I think it makes sense.  The Vespa 300 which is actually 278cc can run over 80 Mph.  If they allowed the big maxi's they would be going 100MPH+ and that would not be a good idea.  Because of the handicap system it seems that the 200cc and below have the best chance of winning.  The Yamaha Smax is considered the best choice for performance vs Handicap but the Burgman 200 is doing well this year as is the Super Cub and ADV150.

If I did even one day of those sort of mileages I’d need seriously to modify the seat of my DTX360!  I did a charity run yesterday which totalled just over 170 miles and by the end my backside was crying for mercy!

I am now seriously exploring gel pads or a seat rebuild over winter.

Wonder if that same youngster on the Cub is running again this year. One year (last?) he rode it out to  the west coast then back again in the race.
Love it!

For me:
Anyone that has not driven an original VW Beetle or ridden on an original Honda 50 Cub.
Anyone that did not rush to see what Little Orphan Annie did this week in the Sunday newspaper.
Anyone who has never read a real newspaper.

He is running again but on a Honda SH150.  He shredded a belt on day one and still finished 11th.  After day 2 he is in 8th place.  This is his 4th cannonball.  Last year he finished 2nd.

I drove an original beatle.  I read a real newspaper.  I never rode a Honda 50 Super Cub but I learned to ride on a Sears 106.  I had no idea who Orphan Annie was.
