MALAGUTI Centro 160ie, Made in Italia
« on: September 27, 2023, 08:56:08 PM »
Dear scooteristi, this I have to share with you. As the header says, this will cover a piece italian made means of transport, called MALAGUTI Centro 160ie (160cc/ fuel injection from PIAGGIO).

A friends friend of mine called in, "my trusted scoot does not charge its battery anymore".

Since it was a nice sunny day here in northern Italy, I took some "first aid" equipment and went there.
On further inquiry (no excessive force used on my friend) he admitted that, all of a sudden smoke appeared from GUTIS bowels and then silenzio on all electric.

Okay, underbelly out, multimeter at charge, (pls see pic cables)
it was clear. Those three AC cables from alternator where patched once and gave up their soul in smoke.....
Remedy: new connector, etc...

Well, this was not all which was hidden at GUTI.
He also mentioned a minuscule working rear brake, which was in his opinion not that significant. Front brake still worked anyway.

I saw a patch of silicon glue, where usually this small roundish brake fluid window sits ???
Asked about this silicon patch, he told me that:

"...this little round window had dissapeared somewhen during last half a year and he thought it would be good to cover this hole with silicone glue..."
It might surprise that without brake fluid, brakes don't work as efficient as they supposed to.
Had a good laugh. (pls see pics silicone/ LH  brake)

So it seems that two independant brake systems/circles might be a little bit of overkill done by Piaggios developement engineers..😉

Finally finished work on this MALAGUTI Centro.
Successfully implanted this level indicator into brake assy.
Easy to be done with a small C- clamp and a piece of plywood (pls see pic).

Well then, wanted to do smtg good to this scoot and change oil.

Surprise, instead of 800-1000ml of old oil, only 50ml (fifty) came out. Checked with a lamp and a poker, no, not more inside (pls see pic).

This means that, this little motor ran for sure the last 100 kms without/ way too less oil.
Posh quality, I might say.
But after putting 850ml synt 5W-40 in it, purrs nicely.

Dipstick's lower part was missing too, which does not make that much of difference anymore.
