feels like brake is on
« on: December 10, 2023, 02:57:27 AM »
Hello everyone, i just bought a 500 and it feels like a brake is dragging. I have jacked it up and i can turn each wheel but it's no where freewheeling. It does this in reverse and from a dead stop and a slow takeoff the second i let off the throttle it stops like a brake is dragging the rotors are not getting hot. Someone said they have a engine brake but im not sure. This is my first side by side so if anyone could help me figure it out.

@Chasdrng welcome here!
Please give some more details about your vehicle.
Model, year, condition, usage where, etc... freezing outside or not...

Makes members easier to do some asessment.

Hello everyone, i just bought a 2013 Kymco 500 UXV with 185 miles and it feels like a brake is dragging. I have jacked it up and i can turn each wheel but it's no where freewheeling. It does this in reverse and forward and from a dead stop and a slow takeoff the second i let off the throttle it stops like a brake is dragging the rotors are not getting hot. Someone said they have a engine brake but i'm not sure. This is my first side by side so if anyone could help me figure it out.

You can't hardly push it by hand either. Even at a higher speed and you let off throttle it feels like you hit the brakes

Not so familiar with UXVs but:
your ride has a parking brake which I would suspect first to be blocking (pls see pic).

MJ 2013 and that little miles on it might have caused brakes to "freeze".
Additional you do have drum brakes which are prone to such behaviour.

Pls download a service manual and go in this direction with your investigation.

You purchased it in this condition?
What was the previous owner's explanation for this behavior?
Do these have a drum, parking brake somewhere?

I'm assuming the brake setup is like my 450i, front has hydraulic disks at each wheel, in the rear there is one disk on the drive shaft, also had a hydraulic caliper for regular braking, but also a cable going to a lever on below the dash

more than once I've taken off wondering why I can't get any speed, easy to forget the parking brake, I use mine a lot, and park in neutral rather than park

previous owner said it's always been that way and has only driven it 180 miles in 10 years. He said he's not much on working on things. My first thought was the parking brake but i drove it u and down the road without using the brake at all and checked all calipers and none were not even warm. Hopefully I can get some ideas that will led to the problem.

Maybe time to remove the belt cover and look at the CVT area.
Check gear oil?

Since these machines have a CVT (basically a snowmobile drive) they never truly "freewheel.
Even in neutral the belts must rotate inside the CVT causing resistance. If the brakes aren't getting hot I wouldn't worry about it.
I have a UXV 450i, even up on 4 jackstands (as it is right this moment), in neutral with the parking brake off the rear wheels are hard if not impossible to rotate, nature of the beast.

Ever try to push a snowmobile?

I TALKED TO A TEC AT A DEALERSHIP AND HE SAID IT COULD BE THE ENGINE BRAKE AND THE PREVIOUS OWNER PUT BIGGER TIRES (14") ON IT WITH BIG LUGS ON THE TIRES AND THAT MAY BE CAUSING IT TO BE THAT WAY. SEEMS IF IT'S THE ENGINE BRAKE SOMEONE WOULD FIGURE OUT A WAY TO EITHER BYPASS OR DISCONNECT IT (HINT HINT)  LOL
