Ruffus, I took your advise, and wired in a 2nd battery. I went with a fairly  big one, a YTX12-BS.  On these colder mornings, 50 & slightly below, it is taking only 2 or 3 hits. I'm amazed. Thank you very much.

My experience, for what it's worth. I bought a 2009 500 Ri to commute to the local airport from our holiday house (no parking fees!). On cold mornings it would crank and crank without starting at all, or sputter into life and die. I can't remember where I saw the advice, but I read that the priming of the injection system is sketchy, and that the fuel pump needs several goes to get a reserve of fuel sufficient for a 'choked' start. So my routine when it's cold is to turn ignition on and wait 'til fuel pump whirr has stopped, then turn off again; repeat 3 times then hit start. Works every time so far!

Thank you for your report!
It's a nice bike, if one can get it started when the sun goes behind a cloud!
Priming the pump and/or an extra battery should make this Kymco a lot more fun to own!
(Wonder if that guy on YouTube. 7 yrs ago   has got his started yet)

Well it's been awhile now, and the 2nd battery has made all the difference in the world. BTW, I always give the injection pump 2 or 3 primes with the key when it's a cold statr.
