5w50 oil?
« on: December 21, 2010, 02:23:54 PM »
The owners manual states to use 10w40 oil, however, I found a white sticker posted on the inside of my seat box that gives some specs. about my scoot and lists 5w50 for oil type. This is for my 2009 P250s.
So what should I use, 10w40 or 5w50? Does it even matter?
I found 5w50 in Castrol Syntec and Shell Rotella has a 5w40. All synthetic oils.
I am currently using Valvoline 10w40 motorcycle oil but was wondering if I s/b using 5w50 oil?
Anyone care to opine?

You will do fine with 10W40 and even better with 5W50.

Do you think I could extend my oil chg. interval out to 1500-1600 miles and run the 5w50 year round?

Okay! Well, no where in the manual or on the scoot does it say to use mc oil so I would have to assume any oil meeting the API recommended grade(s) would be fine.
The benefits of the 5w50 grade is its broad viscosity range, which s/b be good year-round; and possibly a longer OCI. However, since there is no oil filter just an oil screen, maybe going beyond the recommended OCI is not wise! My riding is all paved roads, mostly country roads & some highway speeds.
Which would be better, to change the oil w/conventional oil every 750-800 miles or use a good synthetic and extend the OCI to 1500-1600 miles or once a year in my case?

I would not call oil change every 1500-1600 miles to be "extended", even though you will encounter many people, especially from USA, that like to overdo oil changes.
Depending on the country, you will notice that the same scoot has different oil change intervals.
For example, People 250i S (with injection) has oil change interval of 8.000 kms in EU.

I think that if you change oil every 3-5.000 kms (or at least once per year) you will be good to go.
As I explained once, considering that oil change for P 250 S means approx 0.7 dl, I change the oil every 2-3.000 kms, with 2 l of oil you can do 3 changes without fill-ups and that's it.

When you say "conventional", what do you mean?

I would not use mineral oil (there would be no harm, considering frequent interval change), but semi-synthetic or synthetic.
Personally, I use synthetic, but only because I get it at low price (around 6 US$/l).
Otherwise I used semi-synthetic, when I did not have the source where I buy the oil now.

Once again, I would like to emphasize that in the past I had a bike that did 0-100 in 3 secs and revved to 12.000 rpm, that did just fine with once per year oil changes... and semi-synthetic oil.

If it was possible, I would endorse banning all oil type and change topics on moto forums.  :)

Conventional! I mean regular non-synthetic motor oil.

If your owner's manual and the sticker on the scoot don't agree, go by the sticker. This is from a Kymco rep I emailed once about a gear oil change.

Thanks Agent Bob!

Anyone using 5w50 motor oil in your scoot? If so, what kind and if you notice any difference?
