change to LED signal lights?
« on: January 04, 2024, 03:50:13 AM »
I got a bad blinker so want to swap it out with modern LED blinkers.

Will I have a problem, such as a hyper fast blinker?

And if so, is there an easy way to fix it, such as a Kymco compatible LED type blinker relay?

I'm reading about people adding in resistors, but that defeats the purpose of LEDs.

a) bad blinker and swapping with wrong items results in no blinking at all (permanent on)
b) any blinker relay  (electronic and adjustable for LEDs) will do for KYMCO
c) exactely, will use as much amps as a bulb

My approach would be only change blinker bulbs against LED with integrated electronic which saves you a relay change.
Depends where you live, but all big internet dealers have them. Just chose the right socked.

Really good suggestion - thanks Ruffus!

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

maybe I should give that a try on my Helix! I tried different relays and even adding inline resistors, nothing worked right so I went back to the old school incandescent bulb..

Where exactly is/are the blinker relay(s) in the Super 8? I'm probably blind, but I can't seem to find them.

a) bad blinker and swapping with wrong items results in no blinking at all (permanent on)
The front left signal is permanent off and rear hyper flashing with the bad front blinker. If I replace the bad blinker with an LED blinker, both are then hyper flashing.

b) any blinker relay  (electronic and adjustable for LEDs) will do for KYMCO
I don't think it can be "any" blinker relay, as I believe the Kymco relays are 3 pin (?), and most on Amazon are 2 pin relays.

Unfortunately the screw for the light casing is completely rusted out so I wouldn't be able to access the bulb without destroying the signal case to get to it. I'd rather just move to LED for energy efficiency.

For kymco, what online retailers do you trust? kymcopartsonline scammed me, took my money and refused to send me any parts. I've only been using Amazon since then. Unfortunately, can't find anything decent (good ratings) for signal lights on Amazon.

-blinker relay is in front behind your headlight

-read carefully about relays, says (electronic and adjustable) those are two pronged (pls see pic)
..might need an additional ground cable to casing, can't say right now on your scoot..

-front signal permanent off means interupted cable, search ongoing

-casing rotten, either aftermarket with LED bulbs
(pls see pic) or fitting LED

-here in Europe I order from AMA#ON

my S200 had a 3 pin connector that I wasn't able to match up with an aftermarket flasher relay so I just cut the connector off the wires and connected the 3 wires from the scoot to the 3 wires on the flasher relay. Here's a few pics of mine (OEM) that I found.

ugh, sorry wrong pic, can't find the OEM relay pic...

That's the same problem I had with my Kymco; the 3-wire LED flashers are hard to find, and the "how-to" info is equally scarce.  If you're able to tell us how you wired the new LED flasher into the non-LED Kymco wiring, it would be hugely appreciated!
PS: in the end, I simply wired in a pair or resistors (one for each side) since It appears that there's not a lot of energy involved anyway.  By far the easiest solution.

boy, it's been a few years...but I recall the new flasher was labeled with a variation of what I would call power, ground and ...something...the ground wire was easy to determine (green?) and I used a multimeter to check which incoming wire had power of the other 2 and connected that to the power + wire on the flasher relay. I used the 'butt type, crimp connectors'. I think they also had built in heat shrink that was activated with a heat gun.

OK, just found my old thread..new relay is labeled Earth (ground), B+ for power and L for...the other wire.

Is this thing in the attached image the relay?

Shouldn't there be two of them, one for each side?

This item has a sound device to make a clicking  noise, your blinker to be heard and is a relay.
And no, there should not be two.

There are several similar looking pieces in it (starter relay, light relay, blinker relay the only one which pulses when touched).

Confirmed, it's clicking.

I just ordered this 3 pin LED relay...

and these bullet connectors...

Should have it, and installed, by Wednesday...

edit: light relay didn't work, trying another

I ended up using this signal relay:
https://amzn.to/3Hhlq6L

It's the only one I can find that works. It doesn't have the clicking sound, and the wire order needed to be changed around, but otherwise it's good.

Because only one light died, I used LEDs for front lights and kept the old lights for the rear.
