2022 Kymco AK550 acceleration
« on: June 20, 2024, 11:03:43 PM »
I don't know if this has been discussed before or not. It's very difficult to hold a steady speed, especially at lower speeds. You have to have a very steady hand to hold the speed from going up or down. It may jerk forward then slow down. As the speed increases its easier to hold speed. My solution is a manual cruise control even at very slow speeds, works great. A friend of mine told me the torque smooths right out if you turn the ignition on, open the throttle all the way twice then turn it off. It did improve it but I have3 no idea why. Any thoughts on this from anyone?

The only issue I've noted is the same as on my last 3 bikes, including this one. The throttle was twitchy or sensitive at low RPM for all those bikes. The solution I found was to use a Cramp Buster throttle lever. I can use my entire forearm to move the throttle with incredibly fine control and I am able to hold the throttle position really well. The other issue I do have is holding any speed really consistently +/- 1 mph. I had that same issue with my 2005 Burgman 650... both due to having a digital speedometer. I'm getting a lot better with practice doing that now though. I currently find neither of those issues are very significant at all. Especially now. It's just something that is part of what is different about any new bike I buy. Something to become accustomed to as part of getting to know the bike.

I've never heard of tempering the throttle by opening the throttle all the way. All that really does is to squirt gas into the injectors/cylinders. I also don't see how that can do anything.

a slow speed habit I developed while riding off road on a conventional wet clutch bike, has been slipping the clutch at low speeds,
On my AK550, that converts to dragging the rear brake, works, but not something I need to do often enough to worry about more frequent brake replacement

Fairly common phenomenon on modern bikes, EFI?  My Triumph is very prone to this, but you learn to adapt your throttle control with practice.

Sorry it  took me so long to reply. I would say my manual cruise control has the same function as your Cramp Buster. The grip does take some effort so I use the cc a lot. My wrist isn't what it used to be. It seems there is always a compromise though. I ride along the Mississippi River a lot and a deer may jump out of the woods right in front of you. The Kymco has tremendous stopping power but you would waste a couple of seconds with the cruise on which is too much. An older man pulled out of his driveway this morning right in front of me. Course I was watching him and easily stopped. Being its so hot I ride early in the morning. Yesterday a beaver flew out of the ditch so fast I had no time to react. Missed me by a hair. Well anyhow, thanks for the replies.
