Rare sightings of 2 vintage Honda scooters
« on: August 15, 2024, 10:39:58 PM »
A fellow passed me the other day on an old Honda Elite.
I tried to buy one of 2 that was being auctioned at a Sheriff auction.
They were decked out in Sheriff dept. livery. The deputies used them to patrol the county fairs.

And recently spotted this slightly bruised Honda Helix at my grocers'.

I may have said it here before, but to my eyes, the Helix is fugly! Whatever it's engineering / nostalgia merits.  Preferred your Forza Stig.

OK, ouch, Neil!...but yes, I agree that the Helix has some odd proportions compared to...well, everything else ever made. I also used to think it was hideous. Its appeal goes beyond its quirky, retro, spacey looks. Outside of vintage Vespa owners...is there any more dedicated group of old scooter enthusiasts than Helix owners?  I doubt it. It's a combination of the quirky looks, the amazing reliability, the utility, the COMFORT!,..the comfort and the comfort! Don't knock it until you've ridden one. It puts a smile on your face unlike most anything else on 2 wheels. It's not the fastest or best handling or best at anything....it is just the complete, quirky package that has kept it relevant for almost 40 years, now.

I just went out to my garage to take a few pics and realized there is really no 'good' angle! So yes, it's homely, but she's still a sweetheart.

Hawk, no offence!  I realise criticising the looks of a guy's scooter is tantamount to telling him his wife / girlfriend is somewhat wanting in the desirability stakes!  Beauty surely is in the eye of the beholder.  Your restored Helix is a peach for sure and you're right, I've never ridden one so perhaps I should defer judgment until I have.  I've owned some dogs in my time, the worst probably being a Honda XL185, but closely followed by a CX500-based GL500; competent, but sooo boring!

There have been a number of automotive designs which I hated on first sight, but which I've grown to appreciate, in fact the Range Rover Evoque squashed shape was one and now the wife owns one!

Never say "never" eh?

Hawk - I love your sense of humor!
Hey, my first serious girl friend in school was pretty homely too.

Well, No she wasn't - she was gorgeous actually.
I'll get back when I can think of something believably positive about your lovely Honda!
