I tried to tell my kids about the insects in S.E. Asia - and how much I hated them.
Recently I happened upon this photo.

I managed to escape serving with a 2S and later a high lottery number. However there were a lot of vets at my college.

mostly I heard stories of land leaches

Oh yeah...
We carried Army issue insect repellent under a band on our helmets. A drop or two would work sometimes. But this method worked, too.


Pulling them off too often left the head in for infections.
Have to say - as a medic I removed them from many places - but never the infamous, fabled "urethra leech"!

Once back in the compound a drop of ether in the ear canal would kill the various insects which crawled in there. I always told them it was something other than an insect ... after I lifted it out.

ah, yes, military issue repellant, about 75% deet iirc, plenty of it was available at our college (Paul Smith's) most of our forestry classes entailed outdoor studies, and blackfly season in the Adirondacks is April to September. good paint remover

or the original "Old Woodsman" I think a blend of camphor and turpentine that never washed off

I resorted to smoking cigars
