Scooter rider surrenders to Mother Nature
« on: November 08, 2024, 08:09:11 PM »
This year the leaves all seemed to drop at once!
No way to keep up with my mulching mower.

The front yard looked just as fun.
Instead of raking and mulching for hours again this year, I called in the posse~!
I could have blown them into piles after a couple of hours - but then what to do with them?!

A crew of 7 with gas blowers and one guy pushing the piles around with a big riding mower, spent 60 mins moving my leaves to the curb - then they vacuumed them up!

I made a coffee - but I did get up and check on them every so often.

I bet that wasn't inexpensive!...but anything is better than raking leaves! I usually just mulch them all but with the rain we've had, my backyard leaves are wet and matted down. The mulching doesn't seem to work.

I also have a Bald Cypress and 2 Dawn Redwoods that drop needles/twigs that aren't picked up by a mower, either....I've ended up raking the debris under each offending tree and using it as mulch.

I've got 4 huge Oak trees in my backyard. I have a John Deere D130 garden tractor with the bagger attachment. I bet I empty 20 or 30 bags full of leaves each fall. My neighbor just had his done by a professional. It cost him $350.00. I'm 80 now and probably will have to bite the bullet and go that route in a few years.

I let fallen leaves stay put and let Mother Nature do her recycling magic.  Better for the soil, flora and fauna, easier for me, and I prefer the look.  Prefer the yard to look like a state park vs a golf course fairway. Plus it seems more environmentally friendly.

But maybe I’m just lazy and trying to justify it.

2006 Honda Rebel 250  "Snow Leopard" (stealthy, agile and durable)
2018 Lance Cali Classic 200i  "Black Panther" (smooth, nimble, quiet and quick)
2016 Wolf V-50 (sold)

Wanted a Kymco, ended up w a Lance, but that forum is inactive, so I am here

A thick layer of leaves can starve your grass of sunlight and cause it to die.

True, but I have no grass.  Ripped it out after moving in.  Don’t even have a lawn mower.  Hated mowing as a kid, had no intention of doing it w my own house.

Yes me too Stig!

My guys (who also maintain my garden for me) arrived today and using their motor blowers cleared all the leaves in about a tenth of the time it would have taken me.  IMO £££s well spent.

And I thought I have it bad with self-pruning oak trees and their leaves....
