NSR: March 29th, Vietnam War Veteran's Day
« on: March 27, 2025, 03:50:14 PM »
Seems that 3 presidents are involved in declaring a connection between March 29 and Vietnam veterans.
Nixon, Obama and Trump, each signed something to that effect during their terms of office.

March 29, 1973, is the date the last American combat troops departed Vietnam.
Now, March 29th is Vietnam War Veteran's Day.

The youngest KIA was a 15 yr old Marine.
12 were 17.
5 were 16.
61% were younger than 21.
11,465 were younger than 20.
31 brothers were KIA
Approx 100,000 were severely or 100% disabled.
1,448 soldiers were killed on the last day of their scheduled tour.
One high school in PA lost 54 former students.
18 yr olds comprised the largest age group to serve in Vietnam.
17,539 left widows at home.
Reportedly, the youngest commissioned infantry officer in-country was an 18 yr old 2nd Lt.
2/3rds in Vietnam, enlisted. (not drafted) (and approx. the same as WWII)
70% of the KIA's were enlisted.
The average age of a combat helicopter pilot in Vietnam was 20 years old.

Youngsters.

Some chilling (heartbreaking?) stats there Stig.

There've been a lot of reports locally (UK) about "boots on the ground" in Ukraine and bellicose UK politicians squaring up to Putin.  Madness.  Bet it wouldn't be their sons & daughters packed off to the front-line!

I learned, by heart, Wilfred Owen's famous WWI poem when at school and it has stayed with me since then.  The utter futility of war.  Owen was killed a few days before the Armistice in November 1918.
