New People 150
« on: August 28, 2008, 12:35:32 PM »
I just received a 2005 People 150 from a relative (free no less) and I have a question. The bike has only 1700 km on the clock and is in great shape overall. When I ride at night I notice that the headlight is somewhat dim at idle. As I increase rpm it brightens up quite a bit. Is there a recall / service bulletin for the stator on that model and if so where can I get info on it. The bike was bought new in Georgia and still has the original battery.
I am a big guy and I am amazed at this little 150 and its acceleration. I plan on using this scooter to save a bundle on gas this summer.

No repair needed. That's the way they work. The headlight is driven directly off the engine. The battery/charging system has nothing to do with the headlight.

Thanks for the help Oldguy. I read about a recall for the stator somewhere and I wanted to be sure that it was not needed on my 150.

Always glad to help. :) From what I have been able to find out that recall was limited to People S 125's and People S 200's. Your dealer should be willing to set your mind to rest.

Hi Old Guy,--Excuse the electrical ignorance please, but how is a headlight driven off the engine without having any connection to the charging system?

And does this mean that if I put in a switch to turn off light when don't need it my battery recharge time would not improve?

There's 2 coils in the stator, one charges the battery and one runs AC to the headlight. The one
to the headlight is a little weak at low revs hence the dim headlight when idling. If you shut off
the headlight there will be a little less drag on the motor but no effect to the battery...

My scooter has a Light Control Module that dims the headlight when at idle... To stop the dimming, one has to bypass the module for a direct connection...

Kymco says it's for conserving of electricity... but they failed to consider that when coasting downhill... the engine rpm usually drops and the headlight dims.... and this is very dangerous...

Thanks for the reply MotoRandy. Very interesting and I never would have guessed it. I assume you have reason to believe that my People is the same as your Yager. Kymco pretty much  does all their scoots the same way I guess you are saying?

Well my headlight doesn't dim so it probably runs off the DC side. Oh ya I forgot
that some Kymco's have that funky headlight dimmer module. It's probably to reduce
the load at idle as the stator can't keep up with the draw...
