roller weights
« on: January 24, 2011, 11:37:59 PM »
Hi,I live in Pittsburgh and my area is all hills and I need to climb them at more than 15 mph so I'm gonna change to 5.5g roller weights. My question is what size does my agility take? I've heard 16mm 13mm and dont want to order the wrong ones. And I would also like to know how much top speed will I lose, I now average 35-38 mph on a flat area but I'm willing to sacrifice a little to pull hills better.  Thank you for your responses in advance  Dale

16 x 13 it is the correct size.

Your OEM weights are 6.5gm so you might want to play around with some different roller weights to see what works best.

I use 5gm weights because of the hills around me and I find they work good for my needs.

You can buy tuning kits that have a variety of weights to try and see what works best.

As for top end the conventional wisdom is that lighter weights mean less top end.  I don't think that this is necessarily the case - I didn't notice any loss of top end.  What you will notice with lighter weights is weaker acceleration in the mid-range, but you trade that from more kick at low speeds.

Try some different weights and see what you like.

I have 5.5 that works for me it balances out the top end just were I like it for going up hills and on flat ground. my best top end is at 48 to 50 with little wind pushing me.

Thank you guys   I think I'll try the 5.5 first and see what happens. Do you think the nut will come off easier this time since last time I broke it loose with an impact wrench? I dont have access to the impact wrench no longer.

That'll depend on how tight you put it back on.  When I put the nut back on I use blue loctite and give it a really good tightening with the impact wrench.  So it doesn't come off without the impact wrench - which is exactly how I want it to be.  I've had the nut loosen up before and ended up pushing the scoot back home.  Not fun!

Shame the A-50 is designed to make it so hard to get that nut on/off.  My new scoot (okay, so I'm out of the closet....but I still have my A-50 too) is a Yamaha Zuma and the nut is much easier to get off because you can use a strap wrench to firmly hold the drive face while you take the nut off/put the nut on.

On the A-50 the placement of the starter bendix makes it impossible and you have to find another method if not using an impact wrench.

Damn blue, you put it right through the cover?  You must've been moving pretty darn fast!

Yahama Zuma huh?  Is the yamaha zuma stock much faster than the agility? I went back and forth between the 2 but my dealer was selling the agility new for $1000 so I went with it. Thats before I knew the difference between 2 stroke and 4 stroke. I learned so much from this forum.

Don't know at this point - only about 18 miles on the new scoot (really new, just picked it up) and I haven't done any speed runs yet.

Very different feel to the 2 stroke so I'm getting used to that.  Certainly more punch as soon as you give it gas.   Get that oil smell a bit and has a very different sound too.  I'm liking it very much so far.  I know that the Zuma isn't restricted like the A-50 so that helps.

The A-50 been a reliable and faithful ride for 2.5 years, but decided I needed to pick up a new scoot.  Wasn't going to wait until spring - higher prices and with the cost of gas I figured it might be impossible to find a 50cc around here if I waited to long.

Thanks blue - those were my two main concerns; reliability and ability to find parts.

And also the 2 strokes start better for you in the cold.

Yes indeed it is much easier to start and doesn't require the extended warm up period.  By time I get my gloves, neck warmer, and helmet on I'm ready to go.

Can't wait to get the Zuma broken in more so I can see what it can do.
