speedometer problem
« on: January 30, 2011, 02:03:57 AM »
So now my speedometer needle started to clock down to zero when I would throttle down. When I throttle back it would go back to the right reading.

Now, my speedometer needle while i am driving goes up and down when cruising. Zero up to cruisng speed, and then it stops and stays at zero when driving.

What do i do, besides take it to the dealer.

There's an adjustment you can make to the speed sensor.  Check the attached image for a bit more detail.  Sorry the picture is crappy, I tried to compress it the best I could without losing details.

My speedo started jumping up and down a while back. Adjusting the speed sensor gap fixed it.

Time to replace the sensor at that point.  I can't think of any other reason as to why it doesn't read constantly.  Clean it the best you can along with check the cable for any shorting.  It's possible that something along the cable is causing a floating ground against the chassis.

I had the same problem. I fixed it by resoldering the the three wires of the jack of the speedometerwire. After that the problem came back so I molded the jack in 2-component glue to make it stronger/more resistant. A pain... >:(
Kymco did a poor job on that I think. The wire is very fragile and it will sooner or later fail because of the poor way it's attached to the frame.
Love riding it every day though!

That's good information to gulie... When I finally pick up my scooter this Saturday, I'll look into how to reinforce the connections.

Urbestfriend has experienced the same issue.  Sometimes it reads 100 mph.
Sometimes it won't read at all and sometimes it dances all over ther place.
Once in a while it'll really work.

I actually took several videos to show what it's doing.  Is it the sensor ?
Well....I rode it the 60 miles to the dealer and decided to adjust the sensor.
Went up and down the road and it was OK.   Left the dealer and 2 miles later
it just quit and didn't work for the next 60 miles home.

The dealer has contacted Kymco and they gave him an idea or two.  When
I finally had my video evidence,  I found my dealer goes to Florida from Nov.
to March.  Just waiting for him to get back.

Guile...The more I think about this.   The more I think you are right.
The 3 wire jack you're talking about.  Is it at the speedometer itself
or is it between the speedometer cable and the sensor cable.

I have looked in the past,  but will be removing the front cover
for some other work in the warmer future.

adjusted the speedometer sensor. And the jumping around was fixed, but if i let go of the throttle, once it slows down a little it will drop to zero.

@ Urbestfriend
it's between the speedometer cable and the sensor cable. You can reach it, but it's better to remove the cover.
Hope this helps. If not let me know.

I had a similar problem after buying my used XC. Right after I bought it the speedo would go up and down, sometimes staying at zero, sometimes staying pegged out. Turns out it was a short. I just happened to reach up under the front cowling on the left side and gently felt around, evidently moved some of the wires/connectors, and everything has worked fine since. Probably need to do some of the soldering mentioned to make sure all connections are secure. But you might try some gentle wire moving - the price was right !

Just put the fairing back on.  Couldn't see any loose
connections when apart.  The wires are very small and they
could very easily fatigue from Vibration.  It didn't work at first,  but
seemed to after 2 miles.  Didn't pay too much attention.  It's 70 degrees.

Now here's an interesting fact.  All I did was disconnect the joint.
Looked for any loose terminals (were none) put it back together
and so far has worked better than it has for 6 months.
