headlight only works on high beams
« on: February 03, 2011, 07:25:14 PM »
it got down to freezing  last night i whent out to start my scoot and the battery was dead so i charged it up and it started right up but for some reason only the high beams work. everything works on the bike. could this be the light control box? maybe the switch? where would be a good place to start looking?

start with the fuse.  Might be one inline some where that fizzled out.
Im usually on a bicycle, so for me, this thing is hauling ass!

The fuse probably works for both high & low.

1st check the bulb to see if the filament is blown.
Not sure which scooter you have, but many riders use their low setting much more than the high,  so it wears out sooner.

I would not expect the High/Low switch to fail unless you had a major wetting problem.

I have a 2009 super 8 50 4t I have sent 12 volt power to the blub all the lights work. I guess I have to dig into the dash and test the switch.

Is the scooter still under warranty ?

If so, a trip to the dealer maybe easier.... but probably slower.

I hope you find the problem easily.

My super 8 has a dodgey high beam switch, if you touch it ever so slightly or go over a harsh bump the head lights all together flicker on and off, not too sure what the problem is but maybe its along the same lines?

The low beam wires in one of the bulbs might be broken so you need a new bulb.
If just one off the wires in the bulb is broken the other bulb can not stay on, just for 1 second.

I have noticed when coming to a stop, that the headlight dims. I'm guessing there is some sort of RPM or speed related switch that dims the headlight because it helps the charging system work. I'm guessing that once you start moving, you will see that the headlight will fully illuminate.

They do dim, but it is not a dedicated switch. :) It is by electric circuitry design, they dim by themselves because rectifier is not exactly state of the art.
