Bled Xciting Brakes and found Clutch nut LOOSE!
« on: February 28, 2011, 02:55:07 AM »
My Xciting has been hard to roll lately because the brakes were dragging just a tad.  So I decided to try to bleed them.  Started by trying a vacuum bleeder but did not have good luck.  I decided just maybe I could do all by myself doing the old fashioned way of squeezing levers and loosening bleed nuts -- and it worked fine!

I did the combination rear/delay/L.front as per the manual.  When I came to the delay valve, I found I could sneak my small hand up in there with the 8mm wrench and a bleed hose.  I've done blind wrenching many times and let me tell you this was one of the hardest. I don't recommend trying it unless you really want to test yourself.  ;)

Still there was some drag on the rear wheel which I decided was not the brake.  Looked into the clutch and found the big nut which holds the clutch on had come loose!  Guess I didn't tighten it good when I last worked on it.  It can only come so far off -- but it had come far enough to let the clutch pads start to rub the outside radius of the bell.  Well that's fixed now and I also installed softer pilow springs on the Dr. Pulley clutch to get better response.  I'll be experimenting with other spring combinations in the future.

Now my baby rolls so much easier and doesn't drag while riding at all.  ;)

Yikes... I'll keep that information in mind next time I'm bleeding brakes.  A problem with the clutch going is never a good thing on a ride.

I'm experimenting now with different springs in the clutch.  Dr. Pulley's guidlines say for better take off use stiffer clutch springs and softer pillow springs.  I did this over the last two days.  Just one step for both.  I'm now getting those nice jumps off the line like I did when the HiT clutch was new.

This is somewhat in contradiction to the recommended combination in the instructions, but then their instructions require one to do some interpreting.  :D

I'm going to cross post this under the thread on the quesstion about the HiT clutch because I want to clarify my answers there..
