Please Help. keeps stalling
« on: March 01, 2011, 11:07:03 PM »
My 2004 People 50 has been stalling on me. Sometimes it happens at red lights but more recently has stalled on me while I had it at full throttle. Last time this happened my husband, aka mechanic, said it was running too lean and I had to add more oil to the gas tank when I fueled up (2 stroke). I didnt realize I had to add oil since the bike has its own oil tank (which never seems to go down much). He did some spark plug cleaning and decided to put in a new iridium plug. Been smoking more when I start up cause of the extra oil that I've been adding. Been running great for last 2 weeks.
Today while I was going about 55K/ph the bike stalled again. I could not get it to start again and had to leave it to get help. Usually, I can stick my finger completely up the choke hole to start it but not anymore!! I was told by a biker friend that my fuel line could have a crack from dry rought  (live in S FL) so air could be mixing. Also, the fuel filter might need to be cleaned. Not sure, myself. Please Help!!!
P.S.
My hubby just checked the filter and its clean :'(

The petcock was fine. we found the air filter turned to dust and half of it missing. Prob dried out from the starting fluid (ether) used in the past. Looks like some particles got sucked up into the carb. We live in FL so we removed the air filter completely. I dont really drive on sandy dusty roads. Running good for now!
Also, TheBatman, my last name is Gouleven so gouliegirl sounds more fun!

Hey there, you said you were running without a filter at all? even on the most perfect roads there will be some particles of dust and dirt that you do not want sucked up in the carb. I would put a filter on there if i were you. I run a K&N filter and it works well, it hardly restricts the flow so it is similar to running without a filter but it does keep the dirt out.
Even small amounts of dirt and dust particles can form carbon deposits on the wall of your cylinder that can cause pre-ignition which causes an engine to run rough and can even lead to detonation.
If like you say your roads are clean it should be fine for now but i would not run any engine without an air filter on it for an extended period of time.
Just my two cents.

P.S : at least you have dry warm weather where you are  :P

Yes, prolonged running with no filter will kill your engine. Really you should never do it at all no matter where you live.
Also 1 never just add oil to you fuel tank. It doesn't completely mix. Hence the name premix.
And 2 running premix and oil injection is not nessesary and will actually make your bike run even more lean beacuse adding more oil means less gas is getting in.
