Soon to be purchasing a scoot
« on: March 28, 2011, 12:50:33 PM »
So I will be buying my first scooter this week. I am all but set on the agility 125. I've been reading a lot but can't seem tO get a need on how fast it will go. I have a 70 mile trip ( 35 both ways ) to work each day and would like a road warrior scooter to supplement my 16mpg jeep. I've read that this will go up to 50mph fast but is a little slow after that. I weigh 200lbs and my wife is around 140. Ideally we'd like to use it as a get around vehicle as well as work transit.  The big question is it worth it to stick with the 125 or go a little bigger. I can afford the $2,500 cost of the agility 125 but it's kinda hard to justify the higher cost of the people 150 or even a 200. What's the thoughts of the current owners?

I would use my Agility 125 for such a trip if I was forced to, but I would NOT
choose to if possible, it's too slow. If you can live with 50mph (and when I take
it outside of town I can deal with 50mph for 5 minutes before I floor it) for the
entire trip, then you're fine. Wife will not be an issue either.

BUT, I wouldn't recommend running it faster then that for longer periods, the
revs start to rise RAPIDLY after about 45mph and it's screaming for mercy at
over 55 (but will probably run for years at 55 too with good oil..).

A People S200 (actually 163cc) with just a tad more power and maybe a 5mph
bigger top speed would make A HUGE difference for your trip.

Also, bare in mind that the Agility has NO wind protection what-so-ever, NONE.
People 150/200 are probably the same in that regard though.

for that kind of mileage, i think you would be happier with a 300 or bigger :) and not much more fuel

At 55mph I wouldn't be surprised if a fuel injected 250-300cc scoot would even need
less fuel then the carbed Agility 125.

Could not care less about fuel consumption of scoots, but P250S consumes close to 6 l two up fully loaded on highway flat out all the way (145-160 km/h indicated, depending on slope/slant situation...). Once I almost ran out of fuel, I have reached the gas station running on fumes.  ;D

I gave mine full power most of the time (after running in), the engine blew after 5k, it had regular oil changes. Now with a new engine installed I ride it 45 - 50 and thats about its max if you want it to last imo.

I was a newbie for a bit with the S200 Peoples and had to go to the DT 300i, I weigh 245-250 and the 200 was just too slow for what I'd like to do. I loved the unit but again...the 163cc..no way. Two people, my opinion...have to go with the 300 now question. I never looked back. For your trip the 200 is just no stable enough at high speeds. What I mean by that, I wanted to go 50-55 but it felt like I was pushing. That's just my opinion and I don't want to sound like I know a lot about scooter's...I don't. I learned all from the good people on this Forum and a short time on the S200. I lost a few buck's on the early trade but am happy I made the move and further for sure...went with a 2011 unit not like the first time. Was 2010 and purchased the S200, 2009. Yes, they say there is no change but wait till you trade! Also, I have called about the S250 and heard that the Peoples will be hard in being shipped to the state's anymore. I never want to talk like I know a lot, again, ask the knowledgeable on here, they are happy to help.

i say get something that will cruise comfortably at 55mph. the Agility does not, as its near or at WOT. thats all its got, and maybe a couple mph more

i know some will claim top speeds of 65mph from this scoot (Agility 125), but i don't know what planet they're on or what they are smoking. maybe down hill, sure. but it is a 125cc engine after all, and it only has so much to give

the "sweet spot" so to speak, is 35-50mph for this scooter. it will cruise along at 50 on a flat road under good conditions fine, but after that things get a bit more intense for extended riding as the revs climb. it can maintain 55mph, sure. but would you want it to at those rpms is the question? of course you could use some cheap mods for increased top end but meh. a windshield will help in this regard, too. Cortez mentioned "NO wind protection" but this windshield fits perfect

http://www.scooterwest.com/item_details/Buddy-universal-Windshield-Fits-Most-Scooters/765

its a good scooter. and out in out engine failure is unusual such as another poster wrote. but its not a rocket. its got 125cc and thats all its got :)

also depending on where you are $2500 sounds a little steep. typically an Agility can be had for around MSRP "out the door" or even less. and buyers have been snapping up People 150's and Super 8's 150's for around or under $2500. especially leftover 2009 and 2010 stock. so check out those prices and sales.

Indicated 73 mph on a slight downhill, 69 mph any time on flat surface.
63+mph without any problems on a slight incline.
Probably 6 mph less for real speed.
Never checked with GPS.

I have no problems with revving my vehicles high. Never had a single problem with any of them.
They are made for that.

50 cc 2 stroke 5 hp Piaggio reaches indicated 60 mph, almost twice less power than A125.

It is strange to me how LOW top speed people declare for their scoots on this forum
I wonder how are these bikes run-in or what kind of fuel people use in USA.

FUBAR is an acronym that commonly means "f***ed up beyond all recognition/any repair".

i ran my scoot in pretty hard. never pampered it

fuel in the usa? well we are ethanol crazy, and in California (where i live) ALL gas has 10% of the stuff in it. plus we have CARB (California Air Resources Board) equipment on our scoots by way of emissions standards, and can't even adjust the air / fuel  mixture without breaking the law :(

my Agility has but 2000 miles on it, though. maybe a bit more speed is on the way

also while your top speeds are impressive, i would bet on a 15% optimistic speedo. or at least 10%, which mine is. 10% would give you a 63mph top speed on a flat surface. my max is 56mph, GPS indicated

also i weigh around 250lbs but that should not matter a whole lot, if a little. maybe a few mph at the most

must....lose.....weight! make scoot go FASTER :)

+1

I've seen 73mph on mine, no downhill, but I had the wind in my back.

Here's video of mine from 0 to 69mph:

Everything stock, no hills (none exist here), no wind.

Ethanol: our gasoline has between 0 and 5 %.

CARB&laws: they are made to be worked around. :) You can always adjust your carb and then readjust it back before inspection or whatever. I doubt they will do a road test to see if you tweaked with carb screws.

"My speeds": of course that speedo is optimistic. That is why I every time claim INDICATED speed, not real. If I hate something, I hate urban legends and bs about top speed, acceleration etc.

Weight: welcome to 250 lb club, I weigh the same. We are not fat, just big boned...
