Maybe put the parts of the variator back on, leave the variator cover off, then put it on the center stand and see if the variator actually comes together like it should when throttle is applied. Be careful that everything is in place and it should be safe to test it this way. Wear some protective clothing and no loose clothing next to the variator while it is turning.
