Strange Noise??
« on: April 23, 2011, 10:43:22 AM »
I am hoping soem of you technical guys (girls?) can help.  My son and I went for a ride this morning of about 120kms.  This was all on open road, over mountain passes, etc.

The problem came when I stopped to fill up with fuel - and took off again.  In about the last 7 kilometres through suburbia, twice on take off and once on a sharp turn I heard a weird sound coming from the left lower side of the scooter.  It sounded almost like a belt was slipping, but immediatly after this noise, accelleration was normal  ???

I have inspected the bike and found a lot of what looks like brake dust on the left side panels, as well as underneath and on the back wheel - but nowhere near the actual break shoes  ???  I thought it may have something to do with the rubber "wheel" on the centre stand...or something else that may be making contact where it shouldn't.  Oh, and there was a burning smell - but only immediatley after the noise.  :o

I am stumped - but more worried.  Could this be as a result of our combined weight being in the region of just under 170kgs??  I cannot think that I have ever experienced this when riding solo.

Any thoughts would be appreciated...

Hi,

The noise that you have heard was on the take-off?
If so, it may be because of the OEM Clutch. Some Xciting have a problem with the original clucth that makes an "elephant roar" as take off.
You may find more information on http://www.xcitingclub.es/index.php

Cumps,

Yes, I think it could be a result of the extra weight of the passenger.  I agree with FSO, it sounds like clutch noise from slippage.  Not a real serious problem as many Xcitings do it. But if it gets worse you may have to do something about it. FSO's suggestions would help but some who've done that have the problem re-occur.  Look for and read the thread "Does your Xciting growl?" in this section which was started a year or more ago.  There are a few suggestions there.

Hi,

In my case the clutch was substituted because i was in the warranty period.
However in Spain firstly Kymco was replacing the OEM clutch but then they change their policy and starting reparing it.
It seems that the problem had something to do with the overheating of the some parts and they have change the lubricant oil avoiding the overheating.
Sorry but I'm a little noob at mechanics and can't explain it better...

Best regards,
FSO

Thanks Hoolander2 and FSO.  I am also a noob at these things.  Will give it a bit more time as my 6000km servic is not too far away and I will ask them to have a look.  I must say, I am more than a little worried...  :-\
