exhuast blowing hot air
« on: June 03, 2011, 09:00:44 AM »
So a friend of mine who ride sportsbikes said my exhaust smelled and it was blowing hot, like real hot. So what could be the problem?

Ask him to show you his sports bike exhaust blowing cold ice crystals...

Your friend was not the first in the line when gray brain matter had initial public offering...

you need smarter friends! exhaust is HOT. PERIOD. Now a little tech stuff===
the small cid engine in your scoot needs a higher exhaust back pressure to run at its optimal h.p. and fuel economy. It is also to keep it quieter. yea its hot... think about it , cold engines dont work that well..

It's possible you have a blown gasket and getting boiling coolant steam out the exaust.  Maybe???  I think there is equipment to check the exaust but it's expensive.  Maybe check with a couple of dealers -- even auto dealers to see if they can do such a check.

What does it smell like?  When an engine burns coolant, the exhaust smells like...well...coolant.

To my nose, coolant in the exhaust (implying a blown head gasket) smells like, literally, dirt - freshly turned dirt. Oil in the exhaust usually causes blue smoke; the smell is more like old motor oil, but the smoke usually comes first.

Have you checked the spark plug? It gives you a great insight into what's happening in the cylinder - here's a quick and dirty guide to what you find: http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/70/127/

I think it's your friend who is blowing hot air, not your exhaust.

Just ride over to a shop and ask them if they'll feel the temp for you for free. Worth the gas money for peace of mind.
