Yes, it has been done, wordslinger and Axy both ran mixed weights for testing. If you run only 3, you will need to double the weight of each one to compensate for the 3 missing ones. Those 3 rollers will then wear much faster than if you run 6.

I would just buy a full set of new weights the weight i want, if the variator is designed for 6 rollers its better touse 6 and be better safe than sorry.
If you use 3 it probably will work imo but like sid says they will wear more quickly and i just wouldnt take the chance other than maybe to test out a quick run to see how it felt on different weights. Once i was happy i would swap out to a full set tho and order new rollers in the correct weight i wanted.

My stock variator did 12,500km, roller guides looked ok but the belt face was pretty grooved at different levels where i had sat at different speeds.
If your swapping it ayway why not just get a race variator? Think you will apprieciate the gains and smoother acceleration it gives and Scooter Assassins has a gy6 clone one for an agility on ebay for under £18.60 delivered.

This is the one i fitted when i swapped my worn stock one, been running it now for a few months and a very happy with it so far. Gave an extra 5mph top end too.
