What do you wear to protect your Noodle?
« on: June 29, 2011, 12:58:25 PM »
I have a Gmax GM68S Wizard Helmet on order which was WebBikeworld's Helmet of the year for 2007 http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-helmet/gmax/gm68s/. It has a really cool LED light in the rear for extra visibility at night. They now make an RF adapter that will clamp over the brake light wire so that whenever you hit the brakes, the LED light on your helmet lights as well. These helmets are a bargain too.

I am looking to get a second helmet and was wondering what most of you are using? I love the looks of the ROOF Boxer V8 http://www.fc-moto.de/epages/fcm.sf/?ObjectPath=/Shops/10207048/Products/Roof-Boxer-V8-Graphic-Orange/SubProducts/Roof-Boxer-V8-Graphic-0001&ViewAction=ViewProductViaPortal&Locale=en_US&Currency=USD but not the $500 price tag! Would be cool if we could get some unique helmets like this here in the U.S.

So, what helmets do you prefer!

My first lid was a cheap HJC, £30 but i soon discovered why it was cheap, noisy above 60 mph and not very aerodynamic! I now have a NITRO f341 flip front with drop down sun visor, a lot better allround £70

Get it at least 2x larger than you would, normally, though.

Yeah, I tried a couple of the Fulmer helmets on at the store and was shocked how small they were.

my photo above reminds me...  are motorcycle helmets like bicycle helmets?

Are they only good for one solid hit?

Bicycle helmets are made to crush under impact.  A solid hit and even if it looks ok, its not ok and time to buy a new one.

Moto helmets made the same way?

Very much so. The most protective element of the helmet is the low-density styrofoam, which slows the skull just enough to keep your brain from bearing too much of the brunt impact of slamming up against the inside of your skull. One impact, and it's time to replace, and there's not an insurance company that will fight you on the replacement cost, either.

I got one of these Fulmers about 7 months ago.  It has been the most comfortable helmet I have owned, and I have owned quite a few helmets.  It fit in the same size as I have always worn (medium).  It is my first modular helmet and I really love the flip down sun visor.   It is noisier than most helmets but not an issue for me since I wear ear plugs anyway.

I also have a Fulmer ADV helmet.  It also fits in my normal size.

Matte White & Grey Scorpion EX) 700 with a mirror blue faceshield.
So bad I wish I could post pictures of it.

However the only thing I dont like is its hard to talk to another rider if your just going for a casual drive.
I need to get a open face helmet as well for driving around the neighborhood.

I have to guess your jaw is equal to or less than 5" in width, then.

ianmac, as convenient as open face helmets are, it is around town that you are most likely to come to grief. I absolutely love wearing it, but don't anymore for safety reasons.

Yeah, except when I said round the neighborhood thats literally what I meant.

My wife and I drive around our side streets.... very little traffic... more likely to get hit by a person running or walking their dog than a car.

actually she drives the kymco 50cc without a helmet
I am required to wear a helmet because my bike is 150cc
