Installed the Polini variator yesterday
« on: July 24, 2011, 01:48:53 PM »
Installed the Polini variator yesterday, while doing this I also installed a new drive belt (old one was fine though), checked valve clearances and changed the oil, using Royal Purple 10w-40 Max Cycle.

I went ahead and installed the Polini w/the included 6.9g rollers knowing that they would not be ideal for what I wanted, but I wanted to test them out anyway.  The scoot definitely took longer to get up to speed, but it did seem to develop that speed smoother.  On a flat I couldn't achieve more than 42 mph (speedo) use to be 45 mph (speedo).  Going up hill 30 mph (speedo) was the limit (use to be) 35 speedo).  Downhill was a different story, I could peg the needle and no longer felt the resistance to the gain in speed that I did with the old setup.  Again all of this was expected w/the heavier rollers.  Just thought that I would share.  I ordered my Dr. Pulley 6g sliders today.  They really should be ideal for what I'm trying to achieve, which is quicker acceleration, so as not to hold up traffic when taking off from a stop and better uphill speeds as well.

One thing I noticed was that the Polini drive boss is approximately 1 mm longer than the stock (but shaved) drive boss.  I should have measured the thickness of the faceplates to see if that was the reason for the difference in the lengths of the drive bosses, but alas, I forgot to do it.  Polini drive boss is 39 mm, while the stock shaved drive boss is 38mm.  Anyone think that I should shave the 1mm off of the Polini drive boss?  How much of a difference can it make?

In a day or two I'll be installing the 6G DR. Pulley sliders and 1000 lb. torque spring.  Should I grease the spring loaded starter mechanism?  It seems to stick from time to time and I purposely didn't grease it after I cleaned the belt dust off of it, because I didn't want any grease getting on my variator or belt.

I wouldn't recommend greasing it, belt dust mixed with grease makes a sticky mess that is not good for smooth operation.

Thanks, that's what I thought as well.  I guess I'll order a new one then.

Installed the 6g DR. Pulley Sliders yesterday.  WOW!  what an awesome setup w/the Polini variator and the Dr. Pulley Sliders.  I can still peg the needle on the speedo going downhill, as I could w/the 6.9g rollers, but couldn't do with the stock variator and stock 6.5g rollers.  Hill climbing is much better and my 0 to 40 mph time seems to be as well.

Next up will be the 1000 lb. torque spring, as soon as I can make a homemade spanner to get the Clutch bell off.  Then maybe a race cdi and coil w/the iridium plug.

Oh yeah, word of note with your spark plug.  I incorrectly gapped my plug to 035 (.9mm) and man this thing was a dog.  It started great and the idle was great, but no power at all.  Re-gapped to .025 (.65mm) and the power returned.

Has anyone tried the 5g dr pulley sliders with the polini variator? I just installed the polini with the 6.9 rollers, and it seems have a smoother take off and about a 2mph increase over the stock variator/shaved boss.

Just an update. I installed the 5g dr pulley sliders on the polini variator and couldn't be happier now. More acceleration than before, easily reaches 40mph, and hits about 45 cruising on a flat road. And I can still peg the needle goin downhill. Definitely a good upgrade for my scoot. But keep in mind I weigh 155lbs, so others might need to go up with the slider weight. Just thought id share.
