Possibly silly question
« on: August 05, 2011, 01:59:32 AM »
Since it's well known that most scooters have greatly optimistic speedometers, isn't it logical to assume that the odometer is also reading higher than actual??? Enquiring minds want to know!

I think it is a great question..I have checked my odometer results on mileage against other scooters (riding with others on day and overnight trips) and have had identical mileage with Vespas, Kymco exciting, and two other GV's. Also checked one time against my wife's SUV and it was dead on.  I can't explain it, it is what it is..

I asked for two reasons-how do I get an accurate mpg number-or really know when service is needed-and if the same cable that runs the speedo runs the odo,how can it be accurate?? ???

Odometers are usually pretty accurate.  Check them against the mile markers on the highways.

Analogue speedometers work differently than odometers and are usualy less accurate.  Digital Speedometers can be very accurate if the tires are standard and almost new.

Most manufacturers also make the speedometers a little bit optimistic (some are very optimistic).  The norm for motorcycles and scooters is 7% optimistic.  I've heard it was to account for people throwing the speedometer off by changing tires, or because they want people to think the vehicle is faster - but your guess is as good as mine.
