New owner, frustrated :(
« on: August 19, 2011, 02:28:12 PM »
Hey guys, I just bought a 2010 Quannon 150 from a dealership about a month ago, it had 5 miles on it when I got it. I've been having problems since the day I brought it home. First, it wouldn't idle right, it would bog down at low rpms, and sometimes even stall at intersections. After doing some research online, I found a service manual that said it might be bad gas.

Here's the thing. The dealer I bought it from has had it sitting for a while (2010 model, built in 2009, had only 5 miles on it) and I assume they never drained the float chamber like the manual says to do for storage. I decided to drain the tank and put fresh gas in it. Once I got it running again it acted a lot better, it wouldnt die anymore and it would finally idle, although the rpms would go between 2k to 3k. I did some more research and found that it was probably a clogged slow jet from all that old fuel. I called up a local Kymco dealer and they said that they would need to clean the carb, which is a maintenace item, $100. I politely said f*** that, and decided to do it myself. I took the tank off AGAIN, took the airbox out, then the carb. I boiled the jets in water and put everything back together. I also checked the fuel filter to make sure it wasn't clogged. When I got the bike started, it purred perfectly and I was able to get it to idle at 1600 rpm, which is where it should be. Before, it would die under 2000 rpm.

The problem is, I don't think my auto choke is working. The bike starts up but the rpms stay consistant and never raise. It takes a while for it to warm up to the point where I can twist the throttle and get smooth feedback from it. It doesn't seem to like 3/8 throttle, it sputters a lot. So now I got a new bike with less than 300 miles on it that still doesn't run right. I mostly blame the dealer for not storing it properly and not the bike itself.

What do you guys think? The dealer I bought it from is 150 miles away, and I'm making no plans of going back up there. Hopefully the local dealer will help me out.

Kymco is known for poor auto choke on its 50, 125 and 150 models.
No problems on larger scoots/bikes, strangely.

I have found out that they install wrong parts.
Check service manual and measure resistance of the auto choke. If it is out of spec, this is the culprit.

I have mentioned several times that probably Kymco changed choke vendor and did not check the specs.
Choke on my gf's A125 does not work that good, especially during the winter, and it has wrong resistance, not the one mentioned in the manual. From day one.

Thanks, I will check the resistane on the choke as soon as I get home from work, if it is bad, hopefully my local dealer has one in stock. I'm assuming they use the same choke setup for several different models, so hopefully its a common part.

Hi, I dunno if you read my post but its the post just underneath you, i'm in the same situation, my kymco bought brand new and its also been giving problem from day 1, the quannon 150, so can someone tell me how to get to this autochoke, I have a feeling my is the same problem cuz it will fire up and somewhere around 30 seconds it will die and will be hard to start right after. Last night I took it to work...freakin thing started then died...had to take out fuel tank and violently shake it around...tried and tried until it starts again....now i'm not sure if my problem is clogged tanks or the choke but I'd like to get to the problem cu my mechanic at keele n dundas doesn't seem to know whats happening.

Yes, I did have a chance to read your post. If you said you had the tank off once already, then you're almost there. The air filter assembly is located right under the tank, it is held down by two screws. There's a couple rubber hoses going to it that you can just pull off. Then you just loosen  the clamp that tightens the airbox to the carb. You should be able to wiggle the airbox out now. The carb has its own clamp that secures it to the engine, loosen this, and disconnect whatever hoses are going to it and you should be able to take the carb out now. The electric choke will have a wiring harness coming off of it with a red connector on the end. The only other wiring that comes off the carb is the throttle position sensor, but thats a thick black wire. While you got the carb off, I would take off the float chamber and take the jets out and clean them, I boiled them in water for 5 minutes.

Take a look at this service manual I found, it's for a 125, but everything's the same, go to page 47 for the carb:

Kymco Quannon 125 EN

Been kinda busy this week, but I'm going to the dealer today to see if they have a new bystarter in stock.

Well, a new bystarter is $80, over $100 with freight. Looks like I'm just gonna let this be a warranty repair...

Well, the dealer got it back to me, said the idle air screw was all the way out. He went over the whole carb and tuned it. It's running much better now, I guess these engines really are just "cold blooded" and run very lean in general. Anyway, I'm ordering a new exhaust from WRRP, and I'm going to be putting in some bigger jets to go along with that, we'll see how it acts then.

You have to email the guy, I believe his name is Kim. He'll give you a price depending on whether you want stainless, carbon fiber, etc.. and the shipping price. My total for a stainless steel exhaust with shipping came out to be $315. You can wire the money to them or use PayPal.

I just received my exhaust and put it on last night and WOW! This little thing sounds like a beast! Kinda like a chopper. You can watch youtube videos of Quannon's with exhaust kits but none of them are able to capture the deep sound that it produces. The audio quality sucks in most of those videos. I was shocked at how heavy the stock exhaust is when I took it off, the new stainless steel one weighs a fraction of the original, and makes the bike look WAY better. My throttle response seems a little peppier too. If anyone is still deciding on getting an exhaust, just go ahead and do it, you won't regret it. Next up for me is a jet kit for the carb, you don't need it for the exhaust, but I'm gonna try to get as much potential out of this thing as I can.

I would love to get a Monster, or anything made by Ducati. But for now, the Quannon is pretty fun
