How many miles on 2010 xciting 250ri before I open it up?
« on: August 26, 2011, 04:46:37 PM »
Just bought my first scooter yesterday. Kymco 2010 Xciting 250..

Keeping it under 40 until I get used to it..But can anyone advise if "breaking it in" is necessary?

If so what do you suggest?

Thanks

It will not hurt it to give it some revs, just don't keep the revs in one spot for too long! The new thinking on "breaking in" is to treat it as normal, if you baby it, the rings will not be forced against the bore properly and will create uneven wear in allowing compression forces into the crank case, and oil the other way, leading to higher oil consumption.
That's how i "break 'em in" so far no problems!

Just finished reading the manual..and it says 500 miles 1/2 throttle
up to 1000 miles.. 3/4 throttle...

I'll mix it up like you suggested..makes sense

yea there are more opinions on this that its hard to separate fact from fiction....I am at the same place you are as i just got a new 300dt....the dealer just said don't ride open throttle for first five hundred miles(i wouldn't do this anyway) and mix up the speed levels i am staying at about 50-55 when i have to jump on a major road but this is infrequent..because i do mostly local town hopping and rarely go over 40 anyway

follow the owners manual  ....and make sure you do your first oil change on schedule....actually i am going to change sooner
in the end the scooters performance will be a product of you, your idiosyncrasies and what ever modifications you do....good luck with your new ride

It is close to impossible to do "hard break in" with CVT scoots, and you have to do it in the first 20-30 miles anyway.

What I did with every vehicle: I would vary revs and change oil around 300-350 kms tops.

I would not let the vehicle overheat, I would not drive it at constant speed, I would not drive it fully loaded uphill (two up).

After 500-600 kms, you can drive it however you want. It will develop full power after around 10.000 kms onwards.

Those numbers quoted by mechanics and in vehicle manuals are bs (both "top speed" at certain mileage and/or highest revs at certain mileage).
