Kymco people 50 carburetor problem

Just bought people 50 off craigslist for great price. The bike was banged up so I took the body apart and gave a fresh new paint job and new chrome. I put in a new spark plug and air filter.After all this when I start the bike it runs for a sec and dies. If I give it throttle it dies. The only way I can get the bike to stay running is to cover the air filter and manually choke. I have tried to play with the air and Idle screws but I dont know what Im doing so it is trial and error at best. At one point while adjusting the Idle srew gas started leaking out of the air filter cover where i was choking it. I want to learn to do this on my own but cannot find much info online. I was however able to download the service manual. it gives this 1º ± ohms as the setting for the air screw opening but I have no clue what this means. Help

Do you have any idea how long the scoot sat without running? My guess is that the carb is gummed up from sitting.

Oh yeah, ohms is an electrical measurement. You must be reading it wrong.

I also agree with Oldguy.  You should definetly take the carburetor off and take it apart to clean it.  You can solve alot of problems by a simple carb clean.  I had a link to the service manual but it doesn't seem to work anymore.  I would look on this site for it as I know someone recently posted a link to the service manuals carburetor section.  Good Luck!

So I took the carb off cleaned it up all purty, put it back on, started her up and she was runnin like champ. I adjusted the throttle so it was purrin like a kitten.  And then............ after about five minutes it died on me.  After that it went back to the way it was,  run for a second and then die. i did get it to run for a minute by reving the engine high but it sputtered coughed and then died. i looked for a fuel filter but all I could find is the fuel unit. Is this a filter? Any help would be grartly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!

Did you clean the fuel tank, or at least drain some fuel from the tank to ensure that it didn't have garbage in the tank as well?  It's possible that more stuff from the tank just got down into your carburetor.

I agree, I would clean the entire fuel system.  Drain the tank, new fuel lines, new fuel filter, clean the air filter element and install a new plug.  Process of elimination.  I'm sue it will run fine after that.  New idea, remove the gas cap and try to see if it stays running without it.  It it runs, the vent hole in the cap is blocked....easy fix.  If it still shuts down without the gas cap, then do fuel system cleaning.

You might try replacing the fuel strainer . Good luck .

So I cleaned out the fuel tank ,put a new autocock on it (cause I broke it) ,recleaned the carb and fuel lines and put in new spark plug. and it still is dying on me. I did however make it around the block twice without it dying, but as soon as I slowed down plbbppt! dead. If it sits for a min it will start but then die and it wont start for a while. Any thoughts on what to try next?

I just got 4 times around the block! When it starts if I gun it It will take off, but when I slow to 5 mph or so it dies?

Does it idle okay?

I can get it to idle when I start it but after a drive it dies at idle. I tried to turn idle screw to the right or clock wise and it died before it sped up. i figured Id get advice before going any further.  Good new is this baby has got power. Im sure it has been derestricted. It will do 55 easy.

Ah, progress. Sounds as if it's lean at idle and the fuel enrichment circuit is making up for it when cold. I'd try adjusting the air screw. You'll find a picture of it on page 10 of Section 3 (PDF file P50 cap 03 (manutenzione)) in the manual.
