Best brake fluid and gear oil for our GV?
« on: November 13, 2011, 11:15:21 PM »
Hi guys,

What brand and type do you guys use for Brake fluid (I found prestone have a synthetic one) and Gear oil?

My GV is nearing the 3000 Km maintenance schedule need advice.

I got my GV used so I'm not sure what is the original brake fluid in the reservoir. Shoud I drain or just top it off with a new fluid or better yet use it till it is in its lowest level?

Urbestfriend recommends that before attempting to remove the
brake reservoir covers,  be sure you have proper tools.  The
manufacturers seem to overtighten the phillps screws and they
can be stripped easily.  I purchased a tool that you twist and hit with a hammer
at the same time.  They aren't expensive.  Then consider replacing the
phillips screws with socket types that use an allen wrench.  Metric at any
hardware store.

I use plain Dot 4 Brake fluid.  I also bought a hand operated vacuum pump
which is very helpful in bleeding.  Expensive Sport Cars such as BMW recommend
draining and replacing brake fluid periodically as it's Hydroscopic (Absorbs Water)
and can cause corrosion.

Haven't hardly replaced the gear box oil,  but do use high quality Synthetic Motor
Oil.  My Vino 125 has almost 15,000 miles and still runs excellent.

All brake fluid is synthetic. Some manufacturers use that as a marketing tool. Its all glycol-ether based except for Dot 5 which is silicone based and not compatible.

DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 will all mix with each other. Dot 5 will not mix with the others.

Kymco recommends Dot 4. Any name brand will do. One of my favorites is Castrol GT LMA dot 4. Have been using it for over 30 years with no issues.

As for gear oil, I'm using castrol  C Hypoy 80 W 90 gear oil. It says on the bottle maximum gear protection for motorcycle, ATV, and scooter transmissions.
I think on my next gear oil change I am going to a 75 W 90 synthetic. Any name brand will do.
