Riding a deristricted Agility 50 hurting the bike?
« on: November 18, 2011, 04:35:24 AM »
Hello all, first time post here.

I have an Agility 50 on which I cut the CDI and swapped my clutch boss variator, and I added a windshield. It has about 3,000 miles on it, and I've done all of the maintenance prescribed in the manual.

Recently I pulled up to a red light on my way to work, it stopped idling, and wouldn't start again no matter what, despite battery, gas level, and everything else I could check being fine.

I got it to the dealership and they said I had blown a head gasket by riding it too fast.

My question is, with these two modifications alone, will I overheat or hurt my engine by riding it full-throttle? Is their assessment correct? Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Brad

..well, i put 56,000 kms on my 08 a50 running full throttle, WITH way more mods than what you've done...ssso......

..you can verify a blown head gasket by checking cylinder compression..

..have you verified that your plug is firing?

..if it is, and compression is good, i would suspect trash in your carb's jets....

..it's sad but true, that there are a lot of dealers out there that do not run a reputable service department...

It was confirmed, at least they say, to be a blown head gasket. Any idea how that happened and how I can prevent it in the future?

I would have to see it personally, either them testing it or the scooter pulled apart to show me the head gasket.  Not saying this shop is one of them, but some shops are not the most upfront and truthful. Both scooter or car shops.  Which is why i do most my own work on vehicles.

I have run mine wide open and derestricted from day one. and still going at ~6500km. Normal maintenence. and just did Valve Clearence. running great. Still stock Variator and rollers.

But just because myself and others have not had issues doesn't mean there wasn't something wrong with yours from the factory to cause this issue you know.

So should normal derestrict cause blown head gasket? Not normally especially with normal maintenence as you state.  But it is possible if there was some small defect somewhere that you may not of known about.

Did you fit a larger jet in the carb as part of the derestriction because if not you may have been running lean which could have caused your engine to run too hot and made the gasket fail.....
IF IT IS NOT BROKE DONT FIX IT:)

..especially if the weather turned colder after your derestriction...

So what would be the correct jet range in WNC winter weather, w/a stock carb and stock exhaust?  My AG 50 has the standard Kymco CDI/Boss/82 jet derestriction.  Does a bigger jet size help with the dreaded cold weather warm up issues of the AG 50?

...hmmm..i ride year round...ranging from 25-105 degreesF...

..always starts right up!!   ;)

..i generally range between a .94mm up to a 1.00 mm main jet, but it really is up to reading plug chops to determine what works for your scoot...

..maybe...

..with my a50...k&n and modified oem exhaust, i find that @ every 40 degrees requires a different jet..
