Engine is really hot

OK guys here is the thing.  I go for a 15 minute ride and when I get home the exhaust is red hot (no smoke) and the smell of burning plastic hits me when I turn the bike off.  After investigating I can feel that the engine is red hot.  Is this normal?  I have a malossi variator, K&N style air filter, normal exhaust, up jetted to 90, new racing air intake.

I am at a loss as to why this is happening, I have checked the plug which looks nice and tan in colour and the oil is tip top.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

..do you have the shroud around the engine?

The fan is turning but not sure what u mean about the shroud mate

Is the fuel feed blocked sounds like it might be running lean?

..the shroud is the plastic casing that surrounds the engine...crucial for cooling purposes....


..i too am wondering about that 90 jet...i'm running a 100 with virtually the same setup...

As jezyg says it may be running lean which can make it run too hot, have you had the bike long as it is normal for the exhaust to get very hot that touching any part of it would burn your hand, if i ran mine to my previous job just over 1 mile not even 10mins it would be to hot to touch even 10 mins after stopping engine although that does not really explain the plastic burning smell, the only time i get a burning smell if its wet/raining and it gets onto the exhaust then i get a schorching water smell or the first few trips after repainting exhaust, have you looked over exhaust to check nothing has stuck to it especialy between the plastic exhaust cover i once had a birds feather trapped there and that smelt of burning. Can you only smell it if you put your head very close to the exhaust or can you smell it even from a few feet away????

take the scoot to a car wash and give it a good under body clean.You may just have a lot of extra dirt or what ever dripping on the muffler. I always say a clean scoot is a happy scoot.

O ya check and see if your not leaking oil on the muffler from the valve cover.

guys,

thanks for the replies.  I am really stuck on this one, its defo not grime as it is really clean and I can smell it from a few feet away?  Maybe I need to jet up to a 100 from the 90.  The plug looks good so not rich or too lean.  Damned confusing.  I have no plastic shroud around the engine that I can see

Try running a tank of 97 Ron "Super Unleaded" through the extra detergent can sometimes clean the engine out or just make it run a little smoother worth a try if you do not already use it?

..trust your plug readings for whether or not you are running lean...

You could get more cooling for the engine by installing a pigsnout (dont know if its called the same in english, but it looks like this: http://www.scootergalleri.dk/gal_visbil.aspx?ID=129271 ). The pigsnout will force more cooling air to the engine, and as a plus, it will force even more air to it, the faster you go ;)

Of course, this is only treating the symptoms, and theres still a problem somewhere in your scooter :p
